Amed is not one village but a string of small fishing bays along Bali's dry north-east coast, under the eastern flank of Mount Agung. The sand is black volcanic gravel, the water is calm and clear, and the reef starts a few metres offshore in most bays — which makes it one of the few places in Bali where you can snorkel a healthy house reef straight from the beach. It is also Indonesia's main freediving centre.
Amed sits two and a half to three hours from the airport, and that distance is the whole reason it stays quiet. It also means a driver matters here more than in the south: ride-hailing coverage is thin, the coast road is winding, and the sights worth reaching from Amed are spread across east Bali rather than clustered.
The natural day out from here runs inland and south. Tirta Gangga's stepping-stone koi pools are about 40 minutes away, the Lempuyang temple gates another 30 beyond that, and the Sidemen valley within an hour and a half. Tulamben and the USAT Liberty wreck are 20 minutes north — close enough for a dawn dive and back before breakfast.
