Kuta is where Bali's tourism started and remains its densest, cheapest and most central base — a grid of streets packed with hotels, surf shops and markets, ten minutes north of the airport. Its reputation among travellers is mixed and some of that is deserved, but the location is genuinely unbeatable for a short stay, and the long sand-bottomed beach is one of the best places in Bali to learn to surf.
What makes Kuta useful as a base is not the town but the geography. It is central to everything in the south, ten minutes from the airport for an early flight, and the starting point for most of the island's standard day trips.
The catch is Bali traffic, which is genuinely bad and gets worse the later you leave. Ubud is about 35 km away and can take two hours at the wrong time of day; Uluwatu is closer but the coast road bunches up before sunset. Early starts are not a preference here, they are the difference between a good day and a day in a car.
Do not confuse this with Kuta Lombok, which shares the name and nothing else — a small low-rise surf town on another island, where we are based.

No — they share only a name. Kuta Bali is a dense resort strip ten minutes from the airport; Kuta Lombok is a small low-rise surf town on another island.

How long does it take to get to Ubud from Kuta?
Around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic, for a distance of only about 35 km — which is why early starts matter.
Is Kuta good for learning to surf?
