Selong Belanak is a wide horseshoe bay about 45 minutes west of Kuta, and it is close to the perfect place to learn to surf. The bottom is sand rather than reef, the bay is sheltered, and the wave is a slow crumbling roller that reforms and carries all the way to the beach. Most people stand up on their first day here. It is also a genuinely good swimming beach on a coast where many bays have currents.
The bay sits in the middle of Lombok's best stretch of coast, which makes it a useful base as well as a day stop. Mawun is 30 minutes east on the way back to Kuta, Tanjung Aan and Bukit Merese about an hour, and the Sasak weaving and pottery villages of the interior are within 45 minutes north.
