Bangko Bangko (Desert Point)
Bangko Bangko sits at the far south-western tip of Lombok, at the end of the Sekotong peninsula, and it holds one of the most serious waves in Indonesia.
Desert Point is a long left-hand reef break that, on the right swell, produces a barrel running for hundreds of metres over extremely shallow coral. Surfers rate it among the best waves in the world, and it has repeatedly been voted so in surf-media polls. It is emphatically not a wave for intermediates: the reef is shallow enough that wipeouts routinely mean lacerations, the takeoff is critical, and the nearest hospital is two hours away in Mataram.
The wave needs a big south-west swell and works best in the dry season, roughly May to September, with the biggest days often in the middle of that window. It can also go flat for a week at a time — the break is notoriously fickle, and surfers regularly camp out waiting.
Facilities match that reality. There is no resort strip; accommodation is a scattering of very basic surf camps and warungs, with limited electricity and no ATM. The drive from Mataram takes about two hours, the last section on rough road.
For everyone else, the headland is a beautiful, empty place — but the wave is the only reason most people make the trip.

- Experienced surfers only. The reef is shallow, the wave is heavy, and injuries here are common and serious.
- May to September for the swell; outside that window it is often flat.
- Carry a proper first-aid kit including antiseptic for reef cuts — the nearest hospital is about two hours away in Mataram.
- Bring cash and supplies. There is no ATM, and food and accommodation are basic surf camps.
- It is fickle. Surfers routinely wait days for it to switch on, so build slack into your plans.
- The road in is rough for the final stretch; a driver who knows the route is worth having.
