Benang Stokel & Benang Kelambu
These twin waterfalls sit on Rinjani's southern slopes near Aik Berik in central Lombok, and they are the island's best alternative to the busy northern falls at Senaru — closer to the south coast, and far quieter.
Benang Stokel is the first, about ten minutes on a paved path from the ticket gate. The name means "a bundle of thread", which describes it exactly: two adjacent columns of white water dropping into a shaded pool. It is easy, pretty and where most visitors stop.
Benang Kelambu is 20–30 minutes further up a jungle path, and it is genuinely unusual. Instead of falling clear off a cliff edge, the water emerges from springs in the rock face and filters down *through* dense vegetation in dozens of separate strands — *kelambu* means mosquito net, and that is precisely what it looks like. You can stand behind and inside the curtain of water. There is a shallow pool at the base, and the whole amphitheatre stays cool and green.
The path between the two is uphill, unpaved and slippery after rain, but it is short and manageable in trainers. One ticket covers both, guides wait at the gate for a small fee, and the site is about 1 to 1.5 hours from Kuta — which makes it the only proper waterfall day that works from the south coast.
Travel tips for Benang Stokel & Benang Kelambu
- Kelambu is the reason to come. Do not stop at Stokel and turn back — the extra 20–30 minutes is the whole point.
- One ticket covers both falls, bought at the gate, with optional local guides for a small extra fee.
- Wear trainers or strapped sandals. The upper path is unpaved and slick after rain.
- 1 to 1.5 hours from Kuta — far more practical than the three-hour run to Senaru if you are based on the south coast.
- Go on a weekday morning. Indonesian visitors fill the site at weekends.
- You can stand behind the Kelambu curtain — bring a dry bag for anything electronic.
