Canggu

Canggu, on the coast north of Seminyak, went from rice fields to Bali's most talked-about area in roughly a decade. It is now the centre of the island's remote-work and surf scene, and its character is unmistakable: black volcanic sand, beach clubs, specialty coffee, co-working spaces and a very high concentration of scooters.

The area splits into loose zones. Batu Bolong is the busiest, with the main strip of cafes and the most popular beach break. Echo Beach (Pantai Batu Mejan) is further north-west, a little more relaxed, with a reef break and a good line of sunset warungs. Berawa sits between Canggu and Seminyak with the bigger beach clubs. Pererenan, further north again, is where people go now that Canggu proper is busy — quieter, still with rice fields between the villas.

Surfing is the anchor. Batu Bolong is a forgiving beach and reef mix that works for improvers; Echo and Pererenan are more serious. Board rental and lessons are everywhere and cheap.

The honest downside is traffic. Canggu's road network is a handful of narrow lanes never designed for this volume, and the shortcut routes gridlock at peak times. Journeys of two kilometres can take half an hour. Walking is genuinely often faster, and the beach path is pleasant.
