Ekas Bay
Ekas is a large, deeply indented bay on Lombok's south-east coast, roughly 1.5 hours from Kuta, and it is where surfers go when the south coast feels crowded — which tells you how quiet it is, given that the south coast is not crowded by any global standard.
The bay has two main reef breaks. Inside Ekas is the gentler one: a right-hander that works on most tides and is manageable for confident intermediates. Outside Ekas is a longer, more powerful left and right that needs more swell and more skill. Both are reached by boat from the beach, and on many days you will share them with a handful of people at most.
The inner bay is also increasingly used for kitesurfing. It is broad, shallow and largely flat, with reliable cross-shore wind in the dry season, and a couple of small camps run lessons and rent gear.
Around the shoreline the water is farmed for seaweed, laid out in lines on bamboo frames and dried on racks in the villages — a working landscape rather than a resort one. There are a few surf camps and eco-lodges on the headlands, some with genuinely spectacular positions above the water, but no town, no ATM and limited phone signal.
The road in has improved but the last stretch remains rough. Most people come for two or three nights, not a day.
Travel tips for Ekas Bay
- Come for two or three nights. At 1.5 hours from Kuta on rough road, Ekas does not work as a day trip.
- Inside Ekas for intermediates, Outside for experienced surfers — both reached by short boat from the beach.
- The inner bay is good flat-water kiting in the dry season, with a couple of camps renting gear.
- Bring cash. No ATM, and card payment is rare outside the larger lodges.
- Book accommodation ahead. There are only a handful of camps and lodges, and they are small.
- Dry season, May to September, for the most reliable swell and wind.
