Gerupuk Bay
Gerupuk is a deep bay twenty minutes east of Kuta, and it is the most reliable surf destination in Lombok. The reason is structural: the bay holds five separate reef breaks facing different directions, so something in there works on almost any combination of tide, swell and wind. On a day when the rest of the south coast is blown out or flat, Gerupuk usually has a wave.
Every break is reached by boat from the fishing village at the head of the bay — a five to fifteen minute ride, arranged on the spot for around IDR 100,000 return.
Inside Gerupuk (also called Bumbang) is the forgiving one: a gentle right that works at high tide and suits improvers stepping off the beach breaks. Don Don and Kudeta sit mid-bay and suit confident intermediates. Outside Gerupuk is the serious wave — a fast, hollow right-hander over shallow reef, for experienced surfers only. There is also a left at Pelawangan on the eastern side.
Because the breaks are so tide-dependent, the local boat crews' read on where to go at a given hour is most of the value of surfing here. Tell them your level honestly and they will put you somewhere appropriate. The dry season, May to September, brings the most consistent swell, and the village itself is a working seaweed-farming and fishing community rather than a resort.
