Gili Air
Gili Air is the third island, closest to Lombok, and it is the compromise most people should be making. Gili Trawangan has the nightlife and the crowds; Gili Meno has almost nothing; Gili Air has enough restaurants, dive shops and beach bars to keep you occupied for a week without ever feeling busy.
The island is small — roughly 1.5 km across, walkable end to end in about 90 minutes. Like all three Gilis there are no cars and no motorbikes, by local regulation. Transport is bicycle, foot, or *cidomo*, the pony carts. Many travellers now decline the cidomo on animal-welfare grounds; walking is genuinely easy here.
The east coast is the developed side, facing Lombok, with the harbour, most of the accommodation and a strip of beachfront restaurants where you can watch Rinjani across the water at sunrise. The north and west coasts are quieter, with better sunset views toward Bali's Mount Agung.
Snorkelling is good directly off the beach. Green turtles are common in the shallows on the north and east sides, and you do not need a boat to see them — walk in with a mask. For better reef, take a glass-bottom boat hop that also covers Meno's underwater statues. Diving is excellent: several operators run trips to Shark Point, Halik and Meno Wall.
Travel tips for Gili Air
- Fast boats run from Bangsal on Lombok (about 15 minutes) and directly from Bali's Padangbai and Serangan (roughly 2–3 hours). Public boats from Bangsal are far cheaper than tourist fast boats.
- There are no ATMs you should rely on. Machines exist but run dry regularly — bring cash from Lombok or Bali.
- Turtles are usually visible off the north-east beach at high tide; look for the roped swimming areas and go quietly.
- Walk rather than take a cidomo. The island is 90 minutes round; many visitors avoid the pony carts on welfare grounds.
- Fresh water is scarce and desalinated. Showers can be brackish and hotels ask you to be sparing.
- The island is Muslim. Bikinis are fine on the beach, cover up in the village and around the mosque.
