Kuta Lombok

Kuta Lombok is not Kuta Bali, and the confusion costs people trips. This is a small, low-rise town on Lombok's dry southern coast, backed by golden hills, with a beach road, a night market and a growing cluster of cafés and surf shops. There are no high-rises and no club strip.

It has become the default base for independent travellers, for one good reason: almost everything on Lombok's south coast is within 45 minutes. Tanjung Aan and Bukit Merese are 20 minutes east, Mawun 15 minutes west, Selong Belanak 45 minutes west, and Gerupuk Bay 20 minutes the other way. The Sasak villages and the weaving and pottery workshops of central Lombok are 30–40 minutes north.

The town itself is walkable in twenty minutes. Kuta Beach is pleasant rather than spectacular — the good swimming is at the bays either side — but the sunsets over the western headland are genuinely good, and the night market on the main street is where to eat.

The trade-off is the north. From Kuta, the Senaru waterfalls are a 3-hour drive each way and Rinjani's trailheads 3.5. If your trip is short, base here and accept that you are doing the south and the islands. See our Kuta Lombok guide for neighbourhoods and where to stay.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kuta Lombok the same as Kuta Bali?

No — they share a name and nothing else. Kuta Lombok is a small, low-rise surf town with empty bays nearby, while Kuta Bali is a dense, heavily developed resort strip.

Is Kuta Lombok a good base for the whole island?

It is an excellent base for the south coast and the central cultural villages, but a poor one for the north — Senaru and Rinjani are 3 to 3.5 hours each way from here.

How far is Kuta Lombok from the airport?

About 20 minutes by road from Lombok International Airport at Praya, which makes it the most convenient base on the island for a short trip.

Can you swim at Kuta Beach Lombok?

You can, but the better swimming is at Mawun, Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak, all within 45 minutes; Kuta's own beach is better for sunset than for a swim.

Is Kuta Lombok busy?

It is the busiest place on Lombok's south coast and has grown quickly, but it remains far quieter than any comparable town in Bali.
