Mandalika
Mandalika is the name of the government-designated tourism zone wrapped around Kuta on Lombok's south coast, and since 2021 it has meant one thing internationally: the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, a 4.3 km street circuit built along the coast.
The circuit hosts the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia, and the 2026 round runs 9–11 October. Race week transforms the south coast — accommodation prices roughly triple, the roads gridlock, and the town fills. If you are coming for the racing, book everything months ahead. If you are not, plan around that week entirely.
Outside race weekends the zone is quieter than the branding suggests: a wide coastal road, several large resorts, some unfinished lots, and a string of genuinely beautiful public beaches. Seger Beach, immediately east of Kuta, is the most interesting of them — a small rocky bay that is the setting for the legend of Princess Mandalika, the princess who threw herself into the sea rather than choose between suitors.
That legend drives Bau Nyale, Lombok's biggest cultural event. Each February, on a date set by the Sasak calendar through the *Sangkep Warige* ritual, thousands wade into the sea before dawn at Seger and Kuta to catch *nyale* sea worms, said to be the reincarnated princess. The 2026 festival fell on 7–8 February; the 2027 date is announced a few months in advance.
Travel tips for Mandalika
- The circuit is a street circuit, so parts of the coastal road close during race events. Check access before planning a beach day that week.
- Bau Nyale starts before dawn. The catching happens in the dark on a falling tide; arrive the night before or very early, and expect large, cheerful crowds.
- Seger Beach has a small entry or parking fee, usually IDR 10,000–20,000, like most south-coast bays.
- Book race-week accommodation months ahead — the whole south coast sells out and rates roughly triple.
- The zone is spread out. It is not a walkable resort area; you need a scooter or a driver to move between the circuit, the beaches and Kuta town.
