Mataram
Mataram is Lombok's capital and largest city, and almost no one visits it deliberately. It is a working provincial city of around half a million people — traffic, malls, government offices, universities — without a beach or a resort strip.
Which is exactly why it is useful. This is where the island's practical infrastructure lives: the main hospitals, the reliable ATMs, the pharmacies, the phone shops, the large supermarkets. If something goes wrong on your trip, the answer is usually in Mataram.
It is also where you eat properly. Ayam taliwang, Lombok's signature dish — grilled chicken with a fierce chilli, garlic and shrimp-paste marinade — comes from the Karang Taliwang neighbourhood here, and the original warungs still do the best version on the island. Order it with *plecing kangkung*, water spinach with chilli and lime.
For sights, Pura Meru is the largest Hindu temple in Lombok, built in 1720 with three tiered *meru* towers, and Mayura Water Palace next door is the remains of a Balinese-era court with a pavilion on an artificial lake. Both take an hour together. The Pasar Cakranegara market is the real thing, busy and unpolished.
Mataram also has Grab and Gojek working properly, which most of the island does not.
Travel tips for Mataram
- Eat ayam taliwang at the source in the Karang Taliwang area — it is markedly better than the tourist versions on the coast.
- This is the island's practical hub. Hospitals, reliable ATMs, pharmacies and real supermarkets are all here.
- Grab and Gojek work well, which makes getting around cheap and simple compared with the rest of Lombok.
- Pura Meru and Mayura Water Palace are next to each other and take about an hour together — sarong required at the temple.
- Traffic is heavy from about 7 to 9am and 4 to 6pm. Plan airport runs around it.
- It is 30 minutes from Senggigi and about 1 hour from the airport.
