Mawun Beach
Mawun is the deep crescent bay about fifteen minutes west of Kuta, and it is the one most people name when asked for their favourite beach on Lombok's south coast. Two steep green headlands enclose an almost perfectly symmetrical arc of white sand, and behind the beach there is essentially nothing — a few warungs, a car park, and hills.
That lack of development is the point. There are no resorts on Mawun, no beach clubs and no road running along the sand, so the bay looks much as it did twenty years ago. The sand shelves steeply into deep water quite close to shore, which makes it a striking place to swim but one that deserves respect.
Currents at Mawun can be strong, particularly toward the mouth of the bay and along the headlands, where water funnelling out of the crescent creates a pull. Swim in the middle third, stay within your depth, and treat the far edges as off-limits unless conditions are obviously calm. There are no lifeguards.
Warungs behind the beach rent loungers and umbrellas for a small fee and will grill fish or cook nasi goreng to order. Because Mawun is fifteen minutes from Kuta and on the way to Selong Belanak, it slots easily into a south-coast beach-hopping day.
Travel tips for Mawun Beach
- Swim the middle third of the bay. The pull strengthens toward the mouth and along both headlands, and there are no lifeguards.
- The sand shelves steeply — it gets deep quickly, which surprises people wading in with children.
- Small entry or parking fee, usually IDR 10,000–20,000.
- Bring what you need. Facilities are a handful of warungs; there are no shops, no ATM and limited shade outside the rented umbrellas.
- Pair it with Selong Belanak, 30 minutes further west, for a natural half-day loop from Kuta.
- Best light is late afternoon, when the headlands throw shadow across the arc of the bay.
