Mount Batur
Mount Batur is an active volcano in Bali's central highlands, 1,717 m high, and its sunrise trek is the island's most popular hike by a wide margin.
The format is standardised. Pickup from Ubud is around 2am, the walk starts from Toya Bungkah at roughly 3.30–4am, and the climb takes about two hours on a loose volcanic path — steep in sections but not technical. You reach the rim in the dark and wait for the sun to come up over the caldera, with Lake Batur below and Mount Agung, and often Lombok's Mount Rinjani, on the horizon. Guides typically cook eggs in volcanic steam vents at the top, which is a genuine novelty.
A few honest caveats. It is cold at the summit before dawn — bring a jacket, which people consistently underestimate. It gets busy, with hundreds of trekkers on peak mornings. And a local guide association effectively requires you to hire a guide; going independently is discouraged in ways that are not worth arguing with. Cloud cover is the real risk. In the wet season, and on plenty of dry-season mornings, the summit sits inside cloud and there is no view at all. It is a lottery nobody can sell you out of.
Many trips combine the descent with the hot springs on the lake shore or a coffee plantation stop.

- Cloud is the real risk. Some mornings there is no view at all, and no operator can guarantee otherwise.
