Pink Beach Komodo
Pantai Merah — Red Beach, universally called Pink Beach — sits on the eastern shore of Komodo Island and is one of the few genuinely pink beaches in the world.
The colour comes from red organ-pipe coral (*Tubipora musica*), which breaks down and mixes with white sand. The tone is strongest where the waves wet the sand, and in the softer light of early morning or late afternoon. Under flat midday sun, which is when most day boats arrive, it reads as a pale blush rather than the vivid pink of photographs. Visitors are routinely underwhelmed for exactly this reason, and knowing it in advance changes the experience.
The better argument for stopping here is what is offshore. The reef starts close in and is in genuinely good condition — hard and soft coral, reef fish in numbers, and turtles fairly often. It is one of the easiest snorkelling sites in the park, doable straight off the sand without a guide or a drift, which is unusual in these waters.
There is a small hill behind the beach with a short scramble to a viewpoint over the bay.
There are no facilities — no shade beyond what your boat provides, no water, no toilets. Currents in the wider channel are strong, so stay within the bay, and note that dragons do occasionally wander onto this beach, which is a genuine reason not to walk off alone.
Travel tips for Pink Beach Komodo
- Morning or late afternoon for the colour. Midday sun washes the pink out almost completely.
- Look for it where the water meets the sand — wet sand shows the tone far better than dry.
- The snorkelling is the real draw. The reef is close in, healthy and easy to swim without a guide.
- Stay inside the bay. Currents in the channel beyond are strong.
- No facilities at all — no shade, water or toilets beyond what your boat carries.
- Dragons do occasionally come onto this beach. Do not wander off alone into the scrub.
