Sembalun Valley
Sembalun is a high valley on Mount Rinjani's eastern flank, about 1,150 m above sea level, and it feels nothing like the rest of Lombok. Mornings are genuinely cold, mist sits in the basin until mid-morning, and the fields are planted with garlic, strawberries and vegetables rather than rice and coconut.
The valley floor is a patchwork of small plots divided by low stone walls, ringed by steep green ridges, with Rinjani's bulk closing off the western end. It is one of the most photogenic places in Indonesia, and the best view of it costs almost nothing: Bukit Selong, a small hill on the valley's edge with a fifteen-minute stepped path to the top and an entry fee of around IDR 10,000–20,000. Come at sunrise, when the mist is still in the fields and the light comes over the eastern ridge.
Sembalun is also the main trailhead for the Mount Rinjani summit. The Sembalun route starts in open savannah, which makes for a hot but gentler first day than the steep jungle climb from Senaru, and it is the standard choice for the summit attempt. All treks now require a permit booked through the official eRinjani portal.
Even without trekking, the valley is worth a night. There are homestays, strawberry farms, and a handful of shorter walks to viewpoints and small hills that need no permit at all.
Travel tips for Sembalun Valley
- Bring warm clothes. At 1,150 m the mornings are cold by Indonesian standards — a fleece is not optional if you are up before dawn.
- Bukit Selong at sunrise is the reason to stay overnight; the mist in the fields burns off within an hour or two.
- The Sembalun trailhead is the standard summit route for Rinjani, but the whole park closes 1 January to 31 March.
- Permits must be booked through eRinjani, the official portal, and a licensed guide is compulsory — one guide per four trekkers.
- It is about 3 hours from Kuta and 2.5 from Senggigi, so treat Sembalun as an overnight, not a day trip.
- Try the local strawberries and garlic — both are valley specialities sold at roadside stalls.
