Senggigi
Senggigi was Lombok's first tourist town, a strip of hotels along a curving west-coast bay about 30 minutes north of Mataram. Its heyday was the 1990s and 2000s; when the Gilis and then Kuta took over, Senggigi got quieter. The 2018 earthquakes accelerated that, and some properties never fully recovered.
What remains is a perfectly functional and rather pleasant base with one strong geographic argument in its favour: it is the closest town to Bangsal harbour — about 45 minutes north — which is the departure point for the Gili Islands. If your trip is built around the Gilis and the north of the island, Senggigi beats Kuta by two hours of driving each way.
The beach itself is dark volcanic sand rather than white, and swimming is average. What Senggigi does have is sunset. The bay faces due west toward Bali, and on clear evenings the silhouette of Mount Agung rises out of the sea on the horizon. The viewpoints north of town at Malimbu and Nipah are the best spots on the island for it.
In town there are proper restaurants, a few bars, spas, ATMs and a supermarket — more infrastructure than Kuta, less energy. Pura Batu Bolong, a Hindu temple on a rock outcrop just south of the centre, is worth the ten-minute walk at dusk.
Travel tips for Senggigi
- Base here if the Gilis and the north are your priority — Bangsal harbour is 45 minutes, versus about 2.5 hours from Kuta.
- Drive north to Malimbu and Nipah for sunset, 15–25 minutes up the coast road; the viewpoints are signposted lay-bys.
- The beach is dark sand and modest. Come for the base and the sunsets, not for the swimming.
- Pura Batu Bolong is a small Hindu temple on a sea rock a short walk south — sarong required, small donation expected.
- Grab and Gojek work here, unlike much of the island, which makes getting around cheap.
- The coast road north is beautiful but winding. It is also the road to the waterfalls, so an early start pays.
