Taman Narmada
Taman Narmada, about 10 km east of Mataram, is a royal water garden built in 1727 by King Anak Agung Ngurah Karangasem of the Balinese Mataram kingdom that then ruled western Lombok.
The design has a specific purpose that most visitors miss. The king built it as a miniature of Mount Rinjani and its crater lake, Segara Anak, so that he could perform the annual *pekelan* pilgrimage rites — which require climbing the volcano and making offerings at the lake — without making the climb himself in old age. The terraced levels descend like the mountain's slopes and the main pool stands in for the crater lake.
The grounds are laid out over several levels with stone stairways, frangipani, and a Hindu temple, Pura Kalasa, still used for the Pujawali ceremony each year. Below sits the large bathing pool, and in a walled enclosure is a spring called Awet Muda — "forever young" — whose water is popularly held to slow ageing. There is a small fee to drink or wash your face in it.
It is a pleasant hour rather than a half-day: shaded, quiet on weekdays, busy with local families at weekends. Entry is a small fee, sarongs are required in the temple area, and it combines naturally with Pura Lingsar a few kilometres north.
