Tetebatu
Tetebatu sits at around 600 m on Mount Rinjani's southern foothills, and it is the closest thing Lombok has to Ubud before Ubud got busy — which is to say, rice terraces, cool air and almost nobody.
The landscape is the draw. Terraced paddies step down the hillsides in the classic curved contours, framed by coconut and banana, with Rinjani filling the skyline to the north on clear mornings. Walking tracks run between the fields, and local guides will take you through the rice, past tobacco-drying huts and into the villages for a few hours at a very modest rate.
There are two easy waterfalls nearby, Jukut and Sarang Walet, both short walks from the road through forest. Above the village sits a stretch of protected forest with black monkeys (ebony leaf monkeys) that are considerably shyer and less aggressive than the macaques at Pusuk.
Accommodation is homestays and a handful of small guesthouses, with local food and not much else. There is no nightlife, few restaurants and limited transport — having a scooter or driver matters here.
It is roughly 1.5 hours from Kuta and about the same from Mataram, which makes it awkward as a day trip and rewarding as an overnight. Come for a day of walking and a cold night's sleep.

- The black monkeys in the forest above the village are shy — unlike Pusuk's macaques, they will not approach you.
- Bring cash. There is no ATM and card payment is essentially non-existent.
