Bali vs Lombok: What Each Island Actually Costs Per Day

Lombok is cheaper than Bali. That much is true and widely repeated. What gets left out is where the difference actually sits, and that the gap narrows sharply at the top end and disappears entirely in one category.

This compares the two island by island and line by line, so you can budget from something more useful than "Lombok is cheaper".

Where the difference is real

Accommodation is the biggest gap, especially in the middle of the market. A comfortable mid-range room in Kuta Lombok costs meaningfully less than its equivalent in Seminyak or Canggu. At the budget end the two are closer; at the luxury end Bali has more supply and more competition, so the gap narrows again.

Eating local. A warung meal costs less in Lombok, and the difference compounds across a two-week trip.

Tours and activities. Lombok prices are lower across the board — boat trips, guides, drivers, lessons.

Drinks. Alcohol is more expensive and much less available in Lombok, which for many travellers reduces spending simply by removing the option.

Where the difference is small or reversed

Western food. Order a burger and a flat white in Kuta Lombok and you will pay close to Canggu prices, because the ingredients are imported the same distance to a smaller market. Eat local and Lombok is cheap; eat western and it is not.

Transport. This is the one that catches people out. Bali has Grab and Gojek working almost everywhere, so short journeys cost very little. In Lombok, ride-hailing works around Mataram, the airport and Senggigi — and nowhere else. Everywhere else you are negotiating a car or hiring a driver for the day.

Because Lombok's sights are far apart, a proper day of sightseeing there often costs more in transport than the equivalent day in Bali, even though the day rate itself is lower.

Imported goods. Sunscreen, medication, electronics — all more expensive in Lombok because the supply chain is longer.

Fixed costs that apply either way

Bali charges a tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor, best paid online before arrival. Lombok does not.

Entrance fees are modest on both islands — typically IDR 10,000–50,000 for beaches, temples and viewpoints. Carry small notes; nobody has change for a 100,000.

The practical conclusion

If you eat local, stay mid-range and move around a normal amount, Lombok will come out cheaper — mostly on the room, partly on food, partly on activities.

If you eat western food and want to see things spread across the island, the gap narrows a lot, because you are paying for a driver where in Bali you would have paid for a series of cheap Grabs.

And if you are trekking Rinjani, Lombok is the more expensive island for that week. That is not a bad thing — it is the trip — but it should be in the budget rather than a surprise.
