Gerupuk Bay: Lombok's Most Versatile Surf Destination

A short distance east of Kuta Lombok, Gerupuk Bay opens onto a protected harbour that contains some of the most diverse surfing in Indonesia. Five distinct surf breaks spread across the bay offer waves ranging from gentle beach break ideally suited to beginners, through fun intermediate reef waves, to challenging expert barrels. Combined with a genuine working fishing village atmosphere, a dramatic coastal setting, and the complete absence of tourist infrastructure that characterises Bali's surf zones, Gerupuk is everything a discerning surfer could want.

The Five Surf Breaks of Gerupuk Bay

What makes Gerupuk exceptional for mixed-ability surf groups is the variety within a single bay. Boat access connects all five breaks, allowing surfers to match their session to their level and move between spots as conditions change.

Inside Gerupuk (Don Don)

The most beginner-friendly break in the bay, Inside Gerupuk (known locally as Don Don) breaks as a consistent right-hander over a gently sloping sandy bottom. The waves are relatively forgiving, breaking at moderate speed and offering long rides. This is where surf schools from Kuta Lombok bring complete novices for their first real rides on an unbroken wave. The crowd is usually minimal as more experienced surfers head for the outer breaks.

Outside Gerupuk

The main event for intermediate surfers, Outside Gerupuk is a reliable reef break that produces both rights and lefts. The waves are more powerful and faster than inside, requiring the ability to paddle through whitewater and time waves appropriately. On bigger swells, it gets genuinely challenging, but on typical days it's well within reach for those who have passed the beginner stage.

Ace

A more exposed right-hand reef break on the northern side of the bay, Ace produces longer, more powerful waves than Outside Gerupuk. The entry and exit require local knowledge — getting advice from the surf camp operators before paddling out is essential. Best for surfers with solid intermediate experience.

Don Don Left

A left-hander breaking opposite to Don Don's right. Less consistent than the other breaks but produces excellent waves when the swell direction aligns. Typically less crowded than the other spots.

Kita's

The most powerful and challenging of Gerupuk's breaks, Kita's is a hollow left-hander that breaks aggressively over a shallow reef. Experienced surfers only. The combination of speed, shallowness, and limited margin for error makes this appropriate only for advanced riders who are comfortable in reef surf.

Getting to and Around Gerupuk

From Kuta Lombok: Approximately 10-15 minutes east by scooter or car. Follow the coastal road east from Kuta town.

Boat access to breaks: None of the Gerupuk breaks are walkable from shore. Short boat rides are available from the fishing village harbour, operated by local boatmen. A day's boat access (multiple trips back and forth as needed) costs approximately 50,000-100,000 IDR per person.

The boat ride through the bay is part of the Gerupuk experience — the perspective from water level, looking back at the dramatic coastal hills, is beautiful.

Gerupuk Village

The fishing community of Gerupuk lives its life around the bay with refreshing indifference to the surf tourism that has developed around it. Traditional jukung (outrigger fishing boats) still outnumber surf craft in the harbour, and the smell of drying fish and the sounds of the daily catch being sorted provide an authentic coastal village atmosphere.

Several small warungs in the village serve excellent, very cheap food — fresh grilled fish, nasi campur, and cold drinks. Eating lunch in Gerupuk village after a surf session is one of South Lombok's most satisfying simple pleasures.

Surf Schools and Equipment

Several surf schools operate at Gerupuk, with more choosing it over Selong Belanak for intermediate lessons given the greater variety of waves available. Board rental is available in the village. Quality varies — choose schools that use certified instructors and carry appropriate safety equipment.
