How Much Does a Private Driver Cost in Lombok?

A private driver is the single most useful thing you can buy in Lombok, and travellers routinely assume it is a luxury. For three or four people it usually costs less per head than booking separate transfers to the same places — and it turns the island's biggest problem, distance, into someone else's job.

Here is what it costs, what should be included, and when it is genuinely not worth it.

The typical day rate

A car with a driver in Lombok is normally quoted as a full day of roughly 8 to 10 hours, priced for the vehicle rather than per person. A typical rate sits in the region of IDR 500,000 to 900,000 per day, depending on:

• Vehicle size. A standard car for up to four passengers is at the lower end; a minibus for six to seven is higher.
• Whether fuel is included. Usually it is. Confirm.
• Whether the driver is also an English-speaking guide. A driver who only drives costs less than a licensed guide who explains what you are looking at.
• Distance. A south-coast loop from Kuta is a cheaper day than a run to Senaru and back.

Treat these as indicative market ranges rather than a quote — rates move with fuel prices and season, and a long-distance day is priced differently from a local one.

Why it is usually cheaper than the alternative

This is the part people miss. Lombok's attractions are grouped geographically and far apart. A day that takes in Mawun, Selong Belanak, Tanjung Aan and Bukit Merese involves four separate journeys.

Booked as individual transfers or negotiated taxi runs, those four legs add up to more than a day rate — and you spend the day negotiating rather than swimming. Split between three or four travellers, the per-person cost of a driver is usually lower than the sum of the parts.

What should be included

The entrance fees are worth planning for separately. Beach gates and village donations run IDR 10,000–50,000 each, and nobody has change for a 100,000 note.

Driver versus guide

These are different jobs and different prices.

A driver gets you there safely and knows the roads. A licensed English-speaking guide explains the weaving at Sukarara, handles the entrance-fee negotiation, tells you which ledges at a waterfall are safe, and knows which gate to reach before the coaches.

When you do not need one

Around Kuta. Distances are short and the roads are decent. A scooter is cheap and genuinely useful for the south coast if you are a confident rider.

On the Gili Islands. No motorised vehicles exist at all.

In Mataram and Senggigi. Grab and Gojek work properly here, which they do not in the rest of the island — for short hops in the west, ride-hailing is cheaper than a day rate.

For a straight airport transfer. A one-way transfer is priced as a transfer, not a day.

When it is essential

Anything north. The road to Senaru and the Sembalun crossing are winding mountain routes, three hours each way from the south. Doing that on an unfamiliar scooter is a bad idea.

Multi-stop days. The moment your day has three or more stops in different directions, a driver stops being an expense and becomes the thing that makes the day possible.

Any day ending after dark. Lombok's roads are unlit, and rural traffic includes livestock.

Travelling with children, luggage or anyone with limited mobility.
