Island Hopping in Lombok: Beyond the Gili Islands

Most visitors to Lombok know about Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno. But Lombok is surrounded by dozens of smaller islands — many virtually uninhabited, all extraordinarily beautiful, and almost entirely undiscovered by the mass tourist market. Island hopping beyond the famous Gilis reveals a completely different, more private Lombok — untouched coral reefs, deserted white sand beaches, and the kind of tropical island experience that feels genuinely rare.

The Southwest Islands

Gili Nanggu

The closest 'hidden' island to Senggigi and Lombok's southwest coast, Gili Nanggu sits in a gorgeous archipelago of three islands. The snorkelling here is among the finest accessible from Lombok's main resort area, with pristine coral reefs, abundant reef fish, and regular sea turtle sightings. The island has minimal facilities (a basic restaurant) and a genuinely deserted-island atmosphere.

Gili Sudak

Adjacent to Gili Nanggu, Sudak is even quieter and less visited. The reef connecting the two islands offers continuous excellent snorkelling, and the beach on Sudak's northwestern side is classically beautiful.

Gili Tangkong

The third of the southwest cluster, Tangkong is almost completely undeveloped. Visitors come exclusively for the snorkelling and the beach. There are no facilities whatsoever — bring everything you need including fresh water.

Gili Gede

The largest island in the southwest cluster, Gili Gede has a small local fishing community and several eco-lodges that offer some of the most peaceful and authentic island accommodation in Lombok. Surrounded by excellent snorkelling and diving, with views across to the other islands, Gili Gede appeals to travellers seeking complete immersion in nature.

The East Lombok Islands

Gili Kondo

Off Lombok's northeast coast, Gili Kondo sits in a cluster of small islands in the Flores Sea. The waters here are extraordinarily clear even by Lombok's standards, and the coral reefs are among the island's most pristine — rarely visited and largely untouched. Sea turtles, reef sharks, and diverse reef fish make this a snorkelling and diving highlight.

Gili Sulat and Gili Lawang

Southeast of Lombok, these two islands sit in protected waters with excellent turtle nesting grounds (particularly November-February) and impressive coral coverage. Getting here requires commitment — the journey from Mataram takes over 2 hours by land and sea — but the reward is true wilderness.

Gili Lampu

A tiny island in the Ekas Bay area of East Lombok, Gili Lampu sits above a reef system that includes some spectacular wall diving and excellent snorkelling. Local boat operators from Tanjung Luar run trips here.

Planning Your Island Hopping Trip

Choosing islands: Decide based on your priorities — snorkelling, diving, seclusion, or facilities. The southwest islands are easiest to access from Senggigi. The east coast islands require more planning.

Boat hire: For the southwest islands, charter a traditional jukung (outrigger boat) from Lembar or Tawun harbour. For east coast islands, negotiate with local fishermen in Tanjung Luar or Labuhan Pandan.

Cost: Boat charters typically cost 300,000-700,000 IDR for a half-day depending on distance and negotiation. Split between groups, this represents exceptional value.

What to bring: Snorkel equipment (quality varies at rental points), reef-safe sunscreen, hat, plenty of water and food (facilities on smaller islands are minimal), waterproof bag

Best time: Dry season (April-October) for calmest seas. East coast island hopping can be weather-dependent in the wet season.

The Gili Islands: Still Worth It

Despite the hidden island alternatives, the three famous Gili Islands retain a special quality. The turtle encounters, the dive sites, the island-hopping boat connections, and the social atmosphere on Trawangan create an experience that the smaller islands can't match.
