Unlike Bali, where ride-hailing apps and massive taxi fleets make getting around seamless, Lombok requires slightly more planning — and rewards that planning with access to some of the most spectacular and least-visited landscapes in Indonesia. Getting to Lombok

By Air

Lombok International Airport (LOP), also known as Bandara Internasional Lombok, is located in the Praya area of South Lombok, approximately 25km from Mataram and 10km from Kuta Lombok. Direct flights operate from:

• Bali (multiple daily, 30 minutes — Lion Air, Garuda, Citilink)

The conventional Lombok-Bali car ferry runs between Lembar (Lombok) and Padang Bai (Bali), taking approximately 4-5 hours. Very cheap, no need for booking, runs 24 hours — but long and basic. Used primarily for transporting vehicles.

Scooter Rental — Most Popular and Recommended

Renting a scooter (motor scooter/motorcycle) is by far the most popular way for independent travellers to explore Lombok. It gives complete freedom, access to remote areas, and allows you to stop anywhere along the road — essential for the scenic south coast and mountain roads.

The traditional cidomo — a horse-drawn cart — operates on the Gili Islands (no motor vehicles permitted) and in some traditional areas of Lombok. On Gili Trawangan, the cidomo is a primary transport option alongside bicycles.

Public Bemo (Minibus)

Public minibuses (bemo) operate between major towns and some villages but are infrequent, slow, and require local knowledge to navigate. Generally not practical for tourist itineraries.

Island Connections

Lombok to Gili Islands: Fast boats from Bangsal Harbour (North Lombok) to all three Gili Islands. Journey time 15-30 minutes. Frequent departures throughout the day.

Lombok to Bali: Fast boat (2-2.5 hours) or flight (30 minutes).
