Lombok With Kids: What Actually Works

Lombok is a good family destination that gets planned badly. The two things that catch families out are the drive times, which are longer than the map suggests, and the currents, because several of the island's most beautiful beaches are genuinely unsafe for weak swimmers.

Both are easy to work around once you know. Here is the version that accounts for them.

Where to base

Kuta is the practical answer for most families. It is 20 minutes from the airport, walkable, has the widest food choice on the south coast, and puts four good beaches within 45 minutes.

Senggigi suits families whose trip is built around the Gilis — Bangsal harbour is 45 minutes away rather than 2.5 hours from Kuta. More infrastructure, quieter, and ride-hailing works.

Gili Air is excellent with children for a few nights: no cars or motorbikes anywhere on the island, short distances, calm shallow water and turtles you can see from the beach.

What we would avoid as a family base is anywhere north or inland — Senaru, Sembalun, Tetebatu. They are wonderful and they are three hours from the airport on winding road.

Which beaches are safe

This matters more in Lombok than most places, because there are no lifeguards outside a few spots and the differences between bays are large.

Selong Belanak is the one to build a day around. It is shallow a long way out, the sand is soft, and the same gentle wave that makes it the best beginner surf beach in Lombok makes it safe for children to play in.

Days that work with children

The south coast loop. Mawun, Selong Belanak and back — short drives, one long beach afternoon. This is the easiest good day on the island.

A Gili day trip or overnight. No traffic at all, bicycles everywhere, turtles in the shallows. Children generally love the Gilis more than anything else on the trip.

The craft villages. Banyumulek pottery and Sukarara weaving are both hands-on — children are invited to try the loom and the potter's disc, which holds attention far better than looking at things.

Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu waterfalls, 1 to 1.5 hours from Kuta. Stokel is a ten-minute paved walk; Kelambu needs another 20–30 minutes uphill, so judge that on the day.

What to skip with young children

The northern waterfalls at Senaru. Three hours each way, plus river crossings to reach the good one. Benang Kelambu is the sane substitute.

Pantai Tangsi, the pink beach. Three hours each way on rough road for a small beach.

Any Rinjani trek. Even the crater rim route is two days of serious walking at altitude with a cold night camping.

Pusuk Monkey Forest as a stop with small children — the macaques are bold and snatch things, and a bite means a rabies vaccination course. Drive through rather than stopping.

Practical notes

Book a car with a driver. With children, negotiating transport at every stop is the thing that ruins days. A driver for the day costs less per head than separate transfers for a family of four.

Medical care is in Mataram. The main hospitals are there, roughly an hour from Kuta. Worth knowing before you need it.

Bring what you need. Nappies, specific formula, children's medication and reliable sunscreen are all easier to buy in Mataram than in Kuta, and hard to find on the Gilis.

Dengue is present. Repellent morning and evening is sensible, more so in the wet season.

Dress modestly away from the beach — this applies to children less strictly, but villages and markets are conservative.
