Pink Beach Lombok: The Complete Guide to Pantai Merah

There are only seven pink sand beaches in the entire world, and Lombok has one of them. Pink Beach — known locally as Pantai Merah, meaning 'Red Beach' — sits on the Ekas Peninsula in East Lombok, its blush-coloured sand created by the natural mixing of white sand and crushed red coral. In the golden light of early morning or late afternoon, the beach glows with a surreal warmth that makes it one of Indonesia's most photographed natural wonders.

Why is the Sand Pink?

The distinctive pink colouration of Pantai Merah results from the accumulation of tiny red coral fragments — specifically the exoskeletons of microscopic organisms called Foraminifera — mixed with white coral sand. As waves break over the surrounding reef, they crush and deposit these red fragments onto the shore, gradually tinting the sand with their colour. The intensity of the pink hue varies by time of day (strongest when wet), season (slightly more vivid in the dry season), and your position on the beach.

Getting to Pink Beach

Pink Beach is located on the Ekas Peninsula (Tanjung Ekas) in East Lombok, approximately 60-70 kilometres from Mataram. The journey takes 1.5-2 hours by car on roads that progressively improve as tourism infrastructure develops.

Swimming

The calm, protected waters of the bay make swimming pleasant and safe for most of the year. The water is very clear with good visibility to the sandy bottom.

Photography

Pink Beach is genuinely extraordinary from a photographic standpoint. The best light is in the golden hour — approximately one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset. A wide angle lens captures the beach and surrounding hills beautifully.

Boat Trips to Nearby Coves

Local boat operators at Pink Beach offer trips to neighbouring hidden coves and beaches along the Ekas Peninsula. Some of these spots are virtually unknown to tourists and offer remarkable privacy and scenery. Negotiate a price directly with the boat operators — typically 200,000-400,000 IDR for a 2-3 hour trip.

Best Time to Visit

Pink Beach is accessible year-round but conditions vary:

Dry season (April-October): Best conditions, clearest water, and the pinkest sand (lower water levels expose more of the coloured sand). Peak tourist numbers in July-August remain modest by any comparison with more famous beaches.

Wet season (November-March): Rain can make roads more challenging and reduce water clarity. However, the landscape is greener and visitor numbers are very low.

Best time of day: Morning offers the calmest water and best snorkelling conditions. The beach is most beautiful in golden hour light.

Facilities

Facilities at Pink Beach are basic but functional. Several small warungs serve simple meals and cold drinks. There are basic toilet facilities. Snorkel gear is available to rent. There is no ATM — bring cash.
