Solo Travel in Lombok: An Honest Guide

Lombok is a straightforward place to travel alone, and the risks that actually matter here are not the ones people worry about. Crime against visitors is uncommon. Scooter accidents and sea currents are what send travellers home early.

This covers where to base if you want company, what solo travel costs when the transport is priced per vehicle, and the practical safety points that are specific to this island.

Where to base if you want people around

Kuta is the answer for most solo travellers. It is small, walkable, has a concentration of hostels and surf schools, and the surf-lesson-and-warung rhythm makes it easy to fall in with people without effort.

Gili Trawangan is the most social place in the region — dive schools, beach bars and a constant turnover of people travelling alone. If meeting people is the priority, this is it.

Gili Air is the calmer version: enough bars and dive shops to meet people, without the volume.

Where you will be alone: Tetebatu, Sekotong, Ekas, the north. Beautiful, and you will not meet anyone. Excellent if that is the point.

The real risks

Scooters

This is the big one. The most common serious injury to travellers in Lombok is a scooter accident, and the contributing factors are consistent: unfamiliar bike, no helmet or a poor one, loose gravel, night riding on unlit roads, and inexperience.

If you have not ridden before, Lombok is not where to learn. If you do ride: wear the helmet, avoid riding after dark, and stay off the mountain roads north. Check your travel insurance too — most policies exclude motorbike accidents unless you hold a licence valid for that engine size, which is the single most expensive detail people miss.

Water

Several of Lombok's best beaches have strong currents and none have lifeguards. Mawun shelves steeply with a pull at the headlands. Bangko Bangko is expert-only reef surf two hours from the nearest hospital.

Swim in the middle of bays, not at the edges. Alone, that discipline matters more — there may be nobody watching.

Rinjani

You cannot trek Rinjani alone even if you want to. A licensed guide is compulsory at one guide per four trekkers, booked through the official eRinjani portal, and this is enforced. In practice that makes it one of the easiest things to do solo — you join a group.

Is Lombok safe for solo female travellers?

Generally yes, and it is a common trip. A few points specific to the island.

Lombok is predominantly Muslim and Sasak, and more conservative than Bali. Modest dress away from the beach — shoulders and knees covered in villages, markets and towns — reduces unwanted attention and is simply the local norm. Swimwear is fine on the beach and at resorts.

Attention is usually curiosity and conversation rather than anything worse. A friendly, firm response works. Solo female travellers report Lombok as comparable to or easier than Bali in this respect.

The practical precautions are the ordinary ones: arrange transport through your accommodation rather than accepting lifts, avoid walking unlit stretches late, and take particular care with drinks in the Gili Trawangan bar scene, where spiking has been reported.

The cost problem, and the fix

Here is the thing nobody tells solo travellers about Lombok: transport is priced per vehicle, not per person. A car with a driver costs the same for one as for four, which makes the island's biggest practical purchase disproportionately expensive alone.

The fixes:

Practical notes

Cash. ATMs are unreliable outside Mataram, Senggigi and Kuta, and worse on the Gilis. Carry more than you think.

Hospitals are in Mataram, about an hour from Kuta and three from Senaru. Have travel insurance and know that motorbike exclusions are common.

Tell someone your plans if you are heading somewhere remote like Ekas or the east coast. Phone coverage is patchy in the north-east.
