Surfing in Lombok: From Beginner Waves to World-Class Barrels

Lombok is quickly establishing itself as one of Asia's premier surfing destinations. While Bali remains the region's most famous surf hub, serious surfers increasingly bypass it in favour of Lombok's less crowded breaks, more consistent swells, and rawer atmosphere. With waves to suit every level — from completely flat beginner bays to the legendary barrelling tubes of Desert Point — Lombok delivers an authentic surf experience that remains refreshingly uncommercialised.

Lombok's Best Surf Spots

Desert Point (Bangko-Bangko)

Desert Point is one of the most famous waves in the world — a long, hollow left-hand barrel that breaks over a shallow reef on Lombok's southwest tip. When conditions align (typically May–September during the Indian Ocean swell), Desert Point produces world-class tubes that stretch up to 300 metres. This is an expert-only wave — the reef is shallow, the current is strong, and the consequences of wipeouts are serious. But for experienced surfers seeking perfection, Desert Point is genuinely remarkable.

Gerupuk Bay

Gerupuk is Lombok's most versatile surf area. The bay contains five separate breaks at different locations, ranging from gentle beginner-friendly waves to powerful reef breaks for intermediates. This diversity makes Gerupuk the best area for surfers of mixed abilities travelling together. Surf schools operate here, and the fishing village atmosphere adds genuine local character.

Ekas Bay (Inside and Outside)

Ekas Bay on Lombok's southeast coast offers two breaks within the same bay. Inside Ekas is a more forgiving right-hander suitable for improvers, while Outside Ekas is a powerful reef break that fires during bigger swells. The area is still relatively undiscovered and the surf is usually uncrowded.

Mawi Beach

Mawi is a striking beach in South Lombok, reached by a dramatic descent through bare hills. The break is a punchy, powerful wave that requires intermediate-to-advanced ability. The beach itself is beautiful — dramatic and wild — even if you're not surfing. The lack of facilities keeps crowds minimal.

Selong Belanak

Kuta Lombok Area (Grupuk, Seger, Tanjung Aan)

Kuta Lombok is the hub of Lombok's surf scene with multiple breaks within easy reach. The area offers consistent waves from April–October and is served by a growing range of surf schools, board rental shops, and surf-friendly accommodation.

Learning to Surf in Lombok

Lombok is an excellent place to learn to surf. The combination of warm water, friendly local instructors, and a range of beginner-appropriate waves creates ideal learning conditions. Surf lessons typically include:

• Foam board (soft-top) suitable for beginners
• Theory on ocean reading, paddling, and wave selection
• Practical water time with constant coaching
• Cost: USD 15–30 per lesson depending on location

Surf Season and Conditions

Peak surf season: April–October (Indian Ocean swell, offshore winds)

Off season: November–March (smaller, less consistent swell; onshore conditions)

The dry season swell is generated by Indian Ocean swells from the south, producing the powerful waves that hit Lombok's south-facing coast. Morning conditions are typically glassier before sea breezes develop in the afternoon.

Surf Equipment

Board rental: Widely available in Kuta Lombok and Gerupuk. Options include foam boards, longboards, and shortboards depending on your level. Cost: USD 5–15 per day.

Bringing your own board: If travelling with a surfboard, note that most airlines charge excess baggage fees. Bags and hardware are available at most surf shops in Kuta.

Wetsuits: Not needed — water temperature is comfortable year-round at 27–29°C. A rash vest is recommended for sun protection during long sessions.

Where to Stay for Surfing

Kuta Lombok is the natural base for south coast surfing. The town has grown significantly in recent years with hostels, boutique guesthouses, and surf-oriented resorts. Many offer board storage and direct connections to local surf guides.
