Tanjung Aan: Lombok's Most Breathtaking Beach

If Lombok has one beach that consistently leaves visitors completely speechless, it is Tanjung Aan. Located just east of Kuta Lombok, this extraordinary double-crescent bay combines water of such vivid turquoise that it seems almost artificially enhanced, two completely different types of sand (fine white and unusual round 'pepper-corn' grains), and the opportunity to climb Bukit Merese for panoramic views that rank among the finest in all of Indonesia.

Why Tanjung Aan is Special

Tanjung Aan consists of two connected bays separated by a low headland that creates a naturally dramatic shape. Stand on the headland between the two bays and you get a simultaneous view of both stretches of turquoise water — one of Indonesia's most visually arresting coastal panoramas.

The western bay is characterised by very fine, white sand and slightly calmer water. The eastern bay — Aan proper — features the unusual round 'pepper-corn' sand that exists nowhere else in Indonesia. The round grains form naturally through the constant rolling of sand particles in the bay's particular wave conditions. The effect underfoot is unique — the sand feels almost like tiny glass beads.

Bukit Merese Viewpoint

Immediately east of Tanjung Aan, Bukit Merese ('Merese Hill') rises dramatically from the coast. A 20-30 minute walk from the beach car park, following a well-marked trail up the grassy hillside, brings you to a ridge with 360-degree views of extraordinary quality.

To the west, Tanjung Aan's double bay spreads below you in shades of turquoise and blue, with the green headland dividing the two crescents. To the south, the Indian Ocean stretches to the horizon. To the north, Rinjani's bulk looms over the island's green hills. It is one of Lombok's most rewarding viewpoints, and the hike to reach it requires minimal fitness.

Sunset from Bukit Merese is particularly spectacular. The sky changes colour rapidly over the ocean as the sun descends, creating a display of light that transforms every few minutes. Many visitors consider this to be the finest sunset viewpoint in South Lombok.

Swimming and Beach Activities

Tanjung Aan's water is generally calm enough for comfortable swimming, particularly on the western bay side. The colour and clarity of the water make it ideal for snorkelling off the rocks around the headland, where small reef fish communities have established themselves.

Supstand Paddleboarding (SUP) and kayaking are available to rent from vendors on the beach, offering a peaceful way to explore the bay from water level.

Getting to Tanjung Aan

From Kuta Lombok: 5 kilometres east, approximately 10 minutes by scooter or car. The turning is clearly signed from the main coastal road.

From Lombok Airport (LOP): Approximately 20 kilometres, 30-40 minutes by taxi or private transfer.

From Mataram: Approximately 55 kilometres, 1.5 hours by car heading south.

A scooter is the most enjoyable way to visit — the coastal road between Kuta and Tanjung Aan passes through beautiful scenery.

Practical Information

Entrance fee: A small parking/entrance fee of approximately 10,000-20,000 IDR is collected at the access road

Facilities: Warungs serving cold drinks, coconuts, and simple food line the beach access area. Basic toilet facilities are available.

Horse riding: Horses are sometimes available for rides along the beach — negotiate directly with the handlers

Best time to visit: Mornings for swimming and photography. Late afternoon (from about 4 PM) for the Bukit Merese sunset

Weekends: Tanjung Aan attracts domestic tourists on weekends, particularly Indonesian public holidays. Weekdays are significantly quieter
