Tiu Kelep & Sendang Gile: Lombok's Waterfall Wonderland

In the lush rainforest at the foot of Mount Rinjani, two spectacular waterfalls draw visitors from across the world. Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep — located near Senaru Village in North Lombok — represent some of the finest waterfall experiences in all of Indonesia. The trek to reach them winds through ancient jungle, across river crossings, and past sacred Sasak communities, making the journey as memorable as the destination itself.

Sendang Gile Waterfall

The first waterfall on the trail from Senaru, Sendang Gile is also the most accessible. A well-maintained path leads from the entrance gate to the base of the falls in about 15–20 minutes of easy walking. The waterfall plunges approximately 30 metres into a natural pool that is excellent for swimming. The spray creates a permanent cool mist — a welcome relief from Indonesia's tropical heat.

Sendang Gile is surrounded by lush green vegetation and the sound of the forest. Local legend holds that bathing in these waters will make you younger — which may explain why the pool is always busy with both tourists and local visitors.

Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Continue past Sendang Gile for another 30–40 minutes through progressively wilder jungle and you reach Tiu Kelep — and suddenly understand why people make special trips to Lombok just for this waterfall. Tiu Kelep is larger, more powerful, and more dramatically positioned than its neighbour. The water crashes down from around 45 metres in a thunderous cascade, throwing mist across the pool and surrounding rocks.

The pool beneath Tiu Kelep is large enough to swim in, and some brave visitors swim right into the waterfall itself — an exhilarating experience. On sunny mornings, rainbows form in the spray. The surrounding ancient trees create a cathedral-like atmosphere of remarkable beauty.

The Jungle Trek

The path between the two waterfalls involves crossing the same river several times via natural stepping stones and informal bridges. During the wet season (November–March), the crossings can be challenging and water levels rise significantly. A local guide is recommended for the full trail and is available at the entrance gate.

The forest through which you walk is a genuine tropical rainforest — home to various bird species (black-naped orioles, Lombok flycatchers), macaque monkeys, and an extraordinary variety of plants. The ancient trees that line the path create a tunnel of green that feels primordial and magical.

Senaru Village

The trail begins at Senaru Village, a traditional Sasak community perched on Rinjani's northern slopes. This is also the main trailhead for Rinjani trekking expeditions. The village is worth exploring in its own right: traditional wooden houses with thatched roofs, weaving demonstrations, and a genuine insight into traditional Lombok life.

The women of Senaru are known for their traditional ikat weaving, and several family homes welcome visitors to watch the weaving process and purchase directly from the weavers — a more authentic shopping experience than any tourist market.
