Jimbaran

Jimbaran is a wide, curving bay on the neck of the Bukit peninsula, ten minutes south of the airport, and it is known for one thing above all: eating grilled seafood at a table on the sand as the sun goes down.

Dozens of warungs line the southern end of the beach. The format is consistent — you choose fish, prawns, squid or lobster by weight from an iced display, it is grilled over coconut husk with sambal and garlic butter, and it arrives at a plastic table with your feet in the sand while the sun sets over the water. It is touristy and it is also genuinely good. Agree the price per kilo before they cook, because that is where misunderstandings happen.

The bay itself is sheltered and shallow, with calm water and no serious surf, which makes it one of the better swimming beaches in the south and a sensible choice for families.

Early risers should go to the fish market (Pasar Ikan Kedonganan) at the north end around dawn, when the boats land and the day's catch is auctioned. It is loud, wet, unglamorous and the most interesting hour in Jimbaran.

The area also holds several of Bali's largest luxury resorts on the cliffs above the bay, and it is a short drive to Uluwatu and the Bukit surf breaks.
