Seminyak

Seminyak is the stretch of coast immediately north of Kuta and Legian, and it is where Bali's south goes upmarket. Where Kuta is cheap and chaotic and Canggu is scruffy and young, Seminyak is polished: designer boutiques along Jalan Kayu Aya (Eat Street), the island's densest concentration of good restaurants, and the big beachfront clubs.

The beach is a long, straight run of grey-gold sand facing due west. Swimming needs care — there are rip currents and the surf is often dumping close to shore — but as a sunset beach it is excellent, and beanbags with cold beers appear along the sand every afternoon. Ku De Ta and Potato Head are the established beach clubs; both charge a minimum spend and both are worth one visit.

Pura Petitenget, a sea temple, sits right on the beach among the clubs, and is a reminder that this is still Bali rather than a generic resort strip.

Seminyak suits travellers who want good food, a comfortable hotel and a walkable area, and who are not chasing either nightlife-at-any-cost or authenticity. It is more expensive than Kuta and less expensive than Nusa Dua.

It is roughly 30–45 minutes from the airport, and its central location makes day trips south to Uluwatu or inland to Ubud straightforward, if slow.
