5 Days in Lombok: A Realistic Itinerary

Most five-day Lombok itineraries you find online are impossible. They put the Senaru waterfalls, Kuta's beaches and a Rinjani sunrise in the same week without mentioning that the first two are three hours apart on winding mountain road.

This one is built the other way round — from the drive times outward. It assumes you land at Lombok International Airport (LOP), it groups everything by geography, and it moves your base once, deliberately.

The shape of it

Nights 1–3 in Kuta on the south coast, 20 minutes from the airport. Nights 4–5 on Gili Air or Senggigi in the north-west.

That single base change is what makes five days work. Staying in Kuta the whole time means two separate three-hour round trips north; staying only in the north means you miss the best beaches on the island.

Day 1 — Land and go south

LOP to Kuta is about 20 minutes, which makes it the easiest arrival on the island. Drop your bags, walk the town in twenty minutes, and spend the afternoon on the beach.

For the evening, the night market on the main street is the best cheap eating in Kuta. Watch sunset from the western headland.

If you land early and have energy, Sade Village is directly on the road in from the airport — a traditional Sasak village with thatched houses and backstrap weaving, and it costs you no detour at all.

Day 2 — The south coast bays

This is the day Lombok earns its reputation. Everything is within 45 minutes of Kuta and it strings together in one loop.

Start west: Mawun at 15 minutes, a deep undeveloped crescent with steep sand — swim in the middle third, the currents strengthen at the headlands. Continue to Selong Belanak at 45 minutes, the best beginner surf beach on the island, where a two-hour lesson with a board runs roughly IDR 150,000–250,000 negotiated on the sand.

Turn back east in the afternoon for Tanjung Aan, the big horseshoe bay with pepper-grain sand at its eastern end. Finish at Bukit Merese, five minutes further — a fifteen-minute walk up a grass headland for the best sunset on the south coast. Walk past the first rise to the far knoll; almost nobody does.

Day 3 — Culture and the central waterfalls

Inland and north, but only as far as central Lombok — not Senaru.

Sukarara for backstrap-loom songket weaving and Banyumulek for pit-fired pottery are both within 30 minutes of each other, and they are working family compounds rather than showrooms. Ask what a piece took to make before you look at the price: a large songket is a month of daily work.

Then Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu, about 1 to 1.5 hours from Kuta. Kelambu is the reason to go — water seeps from springs in the rock face and falls through vegetation in dozens of strands, and you can stand behind it. This is the only proper waterfall day that works from the south coast.

Day 4 — North to the Gilis

Check out and move. Kuta to Bangsal harbour is around 2.5 hours; the boat to Gili Air is about 15 minutes.

Break the drive rather than enduring it. Pusuk Pass is on the route — jungle hairpins and several hundred macaques, with car windows closed and phones away. If you have time, the Malimbu and Nipah viewpoints north of Senggigi look over all three Gilis with Bali's Mount Agung behind them.

Arrive on Gili Air by mid-afternoon. No cars, no motorbikes. Walk to the west side for sunset.

Day 5 — Islands, then home

Snorkel straight off the north-east beach at high tide — green turtles feed in the shallows and you do not need a boat.

If your flight is late enough, take the three-island snorkelling hop, which includes the underwater statues off Gili Meno. Otherwise take a morning boat back to Bangsal.

Budget 2.5 to 3 hours from Bangsal to the airport and do not cut it fine — boats are weather-dependent and the coast road is winding.

What this itinerary deliberately leaves out

Mount Rinjani. The crater rim trek is a minimum of two days and the summit three; neither fits in five days alongside anything else. If Rinjani is why you are coming, build the trip around it and read our trek comparison.

Senaru's waterfalls. Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep are magnificent and three hours each way from Kuta. Benang Kelambu on day 3 is the sane substitute.

Pantai Tangsi, the pink beach. Three hours each way to the far south-east. It is a committed day, not a detour.
