Malimbu & Nipah Viewpoints

North of Senggigi the coast road climbs onto a series of headlands, and at two points it opens out into lay-bys with a view that is, without much argument, the best sunset on Lombok.

Malimbu Hill is the first and the more famous. From the roadside you look down over a curving bay of dark sand and out across the strait to all three Gili Islands, laid out in a row on the water. On a clear evening the cone of Mount Agung on Bali stands on the horizon behind them, 100 km away. Nipah, a few minutes further north, sits lower and looks over a fishing bay where outriggers pull up on the sand, with warungs behind grilling the catch.

Neither is a destination in the sense of somewhere you spend a day. They are stops — and they are the reason the drive between Senggigi and Bangsal should never be rushed. Coffee stalls and small warungs have set up at both, with plastic chairs pointed west.

The practical value is timing. The coast road between Senggigi and the Gili ferry port passes both, so an afternoon boat back from the islands can be turned into a sunset stop with no detour at all. The road is winding and unlit after dark, so allow more time than the distance suggests.
