Best Time to Visit Komodo National Park

Komodo is drier than Bali or Lombok — the islands are savannah, not jungle — so the question is less about rain and more about the sea. What decides a good trip here is swell, wind and underwater visibility, because almost everything you came for happens on or in the water.

Here is the year, with the months that matter flagged.

The short answer

April to November is the season. August and September are usually the best of it: calm water, excellent visibility, and the islands at their most golden.

December to February is the wet season, when crossings are cancelled more often and some operators reduce or stop multi-day trips. The park itself stays open — unlike Mount Rinjani, which shuts entirely from January to March — but getting out to it becomes less predictable.

What is in the water when

Reef manta rays are year-round. Manta Point works in every month — the mantas come to a cleaning station rather than migrating through, so there is no closed season. Conditions for reaching it comfortably are better in the dry months.

Mola mola, the oceanic sunfish, appear roughly July to October, when cooler water rises. They are more reliably seen off Nusa Penida in Bali, but Komodo gets them too.

Whale sharks are occasional and unpredictable, most often reported in the wetter months.

Coral and reef fish are good all year. Visibility is the variable, not the life.

The land side

Komodo dragons are visible year-round, and sightings depend more on time of day than season — they are most active in the cooler morning hours and shelter in shade by midday. Rangers lead every walk on Rinca and Komodo Island.

One seasonal detail worth knowing: the mating season runs roughly May to August, and dragons can be more active and more aggressive during it. Rangers adjust routes accordingly. This is a reason to follow instructions closely, not a reason to avoid those months.

The landscape changes colour. In the dry season Padar and Gili Lawa Darat are bare golden grass — the look most photographs show. After the rains, briefly, they turn green. Both are striking; they are just different pictures.

The heat is constant and serious. Padar's ridge and Rinca's trails have no shade in any month. Sunrise starts are about temperature as much as light.

When crossings get cancelled

This is the practical risk, and it is concentrated in December, January and February.

Day boats out of Labuan Bajo are less affected than the long crossings. The multi-day sailing route from Lombok is the most weather-exposed of all — it is open sea past Sumbawa, and that is exactly the passage that gets called off. Crowds and prices

July and August are peak: boats fill, the Padar ridge has queues at sunrise, and prices are at their highest. Book well ahead.

May, June and September give you nearly identical conditions with meaningfully fewer people. September is the single best month if you can choose.

March and November are the value shoulders — conditions are usually workable and prices drop.

Late December spikes for Christmas and New Year despite being the wrong time of year for the sea, so you pay peak prices for shoulder conditions.
