Rinca Island

Rinca is the second-largest island in Komodo National Park and, for many visitors, the more practical place to see the dragons.

It sits closer to Labuan Bajo than Komodo Island itself, which means less time on the boat, and it is often the better sighting bet. The terrain is drier and more open — savannah and scattered lontar palms rather than dense forest — so animals are easier to spot, and a resident group habitually gathers near the ranger station.

Walks are led by park rangers carrying forked sticks, which are not decorative: Komodo dragons are ambush predators, they can sprint at close to 20 km/h over short distances, and their bite delivers both venom and a serious bacterial load. Attacks on humans are rare but they happen and have been fatal. The rules are simple — stay with the group, never walk off alone, and do not visit if you have an open wound, as they detect blood at considerable distance.

Route options are typically short (about 30 minutes), medium (1 hour) or long (2 hours). The medium loop is the usual choice and takes in a hillside viewpoint over Loh Buaya bay.

The island also has water buffalo, Timor deer, macaques and wild boar — the dragons' prey, which is precisely why the dragons are there.

Is Rinca or Komodo Island better for seeing dragons? Rinca is closer to Labuan Bajo and its drier, more open terrain often makes dragons easier to spot, so many operators favour it.
