Gili Islands Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Three small islands floating off Lombok's northwest coast have become one of Indonesia's most iconic destinations. The Gili Islands — Trawangan, Air, and Meno — are car-free, motorcycle-free, and utterly enchanting. Whether you want to party under the stars, snorkel with sea turtles, or disappear into a romantic tropical hideaway, one of these islands is your perfect match.

The Three Gili Islands at a Glance

Gili Trawangan – The Social Island

The largest and liveliest of the three, Gili Trawangan (known as 'Gili T') is famous for its beachside bars, night markets, and energetic atmosphere. Despite its party reputation, Gili T also has excellent snorkelling, beautiful sunsets, and a quieter east coast that offers a more peaceful experience. This is the right island if you want nightlife, plenty of dining options, and a social atmosphere.

Gili Air – The Balanced Island

Gili Air sits perfectly between Trawangan's bustle and Meno's silence. It has a genuine village community, a range of restaurants and cafes with real personality, excellent diving schools, and a laid-back vibe that attracts digital nomads, couples, and families alike. Most travellers who ask for a recommendation get told: Gili Air.

Gili Meno – The Honeymoon Island

The smallest and quietest of the three, Gili Meno is where couples come to disappear. There are no loud bars here — just pristine beach, nesting sea turtles, a bird sanctuary, and some of the clearest water in Indonesia. The 'Nest' underwater sculpture garden, created by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor, is Meno's most famous attraction.

Snorkelling with Sea Turtles

Turtle Point, located between Gili Meno and Gili Air, is one of the most reliably good sea turtle snorkelling spots in Asia. You can encounter green turtles and hawksbill turtles at depths of just 2–5 metres, often while they feed on seagrass. The experience is available directly from the beach with basic snorkel gear.

Scuba Diving

The Gili Islands offer some of Indonesia's best accessible diving. Highlights include Shark Point (not as scary as it sounds — these are white-tip and black-tip reef sharks), the Bounty wreck, Turtle Heaven, and the underwater sculpture garden near Gili Meno. Most dives are suitable for Open Water certified divers.

Cycling Around the Islands

With no motorised vehicles allowed, bicycles are the primary transport on all three islands. Cycling around Gili Trawangan (the largest) takes about an hour and offers beautiful coastal views, rice paddies, and glimpses of local life. Bikes are available for rent for around 50,000–75,000 IDR per day.

Watching Sunset

Gili Trawangan's west coast offers some of the most spectacular sunsets in Indonesia, with Mount Rinjani as a dramatic backdrop across the water. The beachside bars and warungs along this stretch fill up every evening for the ritual sunset viewing.

Getting to the Gili Islands

From Lombok: Fast boats from Bangsal Harbour (north Lombok) take 15–20 minutes to Gili Trawangan. Public boats also run regular schedules at lower prices.

From Bali: Fast boat services run from Padang Bai and Serangan harbour to the Gili Islands in 1.5–2 hours. Direct transfers from Bali's major beach areas are widely available.

From Lombok Airport (LOP): Transfer to Bangsal Harbour takes approximately 1.5–2 hours by car, then boat.

Practical Tips

Accommodation: Book in advance for July–August peak season. Gili T has the most options from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts. Meno has the smallest selection.

Money: Bring cash (Indonesian Rupiah). ATMs exist on Gili T and Gili Air but are unreliable. Gili Meno has very limited ATM access.

Water: Never drink tap water. Bring reusable bottles and refill at stations — single-use plastic is increasingly restricted.

Connectivity: Mobile internet exists on all three islands but can be slow. Gili Meno has the weakest signal — ideal for digital detox.

Island Hopping

Many visitors spend one to two nights on each island before continuing to Lombok or Bali. Island hopping boats run throughout the day and cost around 30,000–50,000 IDR per crossing.
