A Lombok Honeymoon: Where to Actually Go

Lombok is a very good honeymoon destination and an easy one to over-plan. The instinct is to see everything: the volcano, the waterfalls, the pink beach, all three Gilis. That produces a honeymoon spent mostly in a car on winding roads.

The better version does two places properly. Here is how we would build it.

The shape we would recommend

Four or five nights on the south coast, then four or five on an island. One transfer, no backtracking, and both halves genuinely different.

Or, if you want maximum quiet: Gili Meno plus Sekotong, which is the version almost nobody books and the one we would choose.

The islands, for couples

Gili Meno is the honeymoon island and has been for years. It is the smallest and quietest of the three, with long undeveloped stretches of coast, no nightlife and few restaurants. A walk around takes 90 minutes and passes places where you will see nobody.

Its one real attraction is the Nest, the underwater sculpture installation off the west coast — 48 life-size figures in a ring on the seabed, shallow enough to snorkel. Stay at least two nights so you get the island after the day boats leave, which is when it becomes what people come for.

Gili Air is the compromise if Meno sounds like too little. Enough restaurants and beach bars to have somewhere to go in the evening, turtles off the beach, and still nothing like Trawangan's volume.

Gili Trawangan we would generally not recommend for a honeymoon unless you want nights out — the east coast strip is busy and loud.

The quiet alternative: Sekotong

The Sekotong peninsula in the south-west has more than a dozen small islands off its coast, most uninhabited, and almost no visitors.

Gili Nanggu has a single small resort, a shallow reef that starts a few metres from the sand, and — once the day boats leave in the afternoon — essentially nobody. A three-island boat charter across Nanggu, Sudak and Kedis costs around IDR 400,000–600,000 for the whole boat, not per person.

This is the version for couples who want privacy over facilities. There is no nightlife, no shop and no ATM, which is either the appeal or the problem.

The south coast

Kuta as a base, with the bays either side. The romantic core of the south is straightforward:

Bukit Merese at sunset. Fifteen minutes up a grass headland for a 270-degree view over the coast. Walk past the first rise to the far knoll, where almost nobody goes, and take a torch for the way down.

Mawun on a weekday. A deep undeveloped crescent with nothing behind it — no resorts, no road along the sand. Swim in the middle third.

Selong Belanak in the morning, when the water is glassy.

Malimbu and Nipah if you are transferring north — the best sunset on the island, looking over all three Gilis with Bali's Mount Agung behind them.

What to skip on a honeymoon

Mount Rinjani. Two to four days of hard walking, cold nights in shared camps and a 2am summit push. It is a superb trek and an odd honeymoon.

If you want the mountain without the trek, stay a night in Sembalun Valley and walk Bukit Selong at sunrise — fifteen minutes up a stepped path for mist lying in the garlic fields with the volcano above. That is the romantic version.

Pantai Tangsi. Three hours each way for a beach that is subtly pink in the right light. Not a honeymoon day.

Trying to do north and south. Pick one. The three-hour transfer between them is the single most common way people waste a short trip here.
