Lombok vs Bali: Which Island Should You Actually Choose?

We sell tours on both islands, which means we have no particular incentive to talk you into either. So here is the comparison without the usual framing of Lombok as "the unspoiled Bali" — a description that flatters neither island and misleads people about what they are booking.

They are 35 km apart and genuinely different places, with different religions, different landscapes and different levels of development. One of them is probably right for your trip.

The honest summary

Bali has better food, better hotels, more to do, and far more traffic. Lombok has emptier beaches, a serious volcano, and much longer drives between things.

If this is your first trip to Indonesia and you have a week, go to Bali. If you have been to Bali, or you specifically want space, go to Lombok. If you have two weeks, do both — they are 30 minutes apart by air.

Where Bali genuinely wins

Food. It is not close. Bali has the best restaurant scene in Indonesia outside Jakarta, at every price point, in Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud. Lombok has good local food and a thin international scene.

Accommodation. Bali has more choice at every level, and the mid-range is dramatically better. Lombok's options are improving but shallow outside Kuta and Senggigi.

Things to do when it rains. Bali has museums, galleries, spas, cooking schools, shopping. Lombok has a wet afternoon.

Infrastructure. Ride-hailing apps work in most of Bali. In Lombok they work around Mataram and the airport and nowhere else.

Culture you can walk into. Balinese Hinduism is visible everywhere — daily offerings, temple ceremonies, dance performances. It is one of the most accessible living cultures in Asia.

Where Lombok genuinely wins

Empty beaches. This is the big one. Mawun, Selong Belanak and Tanjung Aan are the equal of anything in Bali and have a fraction of the people. On a weekday in the shoulder season you can have a bay largely to yourself.

The volcano. Mount Rinjani at 3,726 m is a serious multi-day trek to a crater lake. Bali's Mount Batur is a two-hour walk up a hill with several hundred other people. Different categories entirely.

Traffic. Lombok's roads are long but they move. Bali's are short and do not — Ubud to Uluwatu is 40 km and can take two and a half hours.

Cost. Lombok is meaningfully cheaper for accommodation, food and tours.

The Gilis. Gili Trawangan, Air and Meno are a 15-minute boat from Lombok's coast and are the best easy island experience in either place.

The cultural difference nobody mentions

Bali is Hindu. Lombok is roughly 85% Sasak and predominantly Muslim. This changes the texture of a trip in practical ways: mosques rather than temples, the call to prayer rather than gamelan, and a stronger expectation of modest dress once you leave the beach — shoulders and knees covered in villages and markets.

Alcohol is available in tourist areas of Lombok but far less visible than in Bali. During Ramadan, many local restaurants outside the tourist strips close during daylight.

None of this makes Lombok difficult. It does mean that travellers who arrive expecting Bali with fewer people are surprised, and it is better to know in advance.

Doing both

This is what we would actually recommend for a two-week trip, and it is not a compromise — it is the best version.

Flights between Denpasar and Lombok take about 30 minutes and run several times a day. Fast boats also connect Bali to Lombok and the Gilis directly in two to three hours.

A sensible split is five or six days in Bali — south coast, Ubud, one further region — then five or six in Lombok, covering the south coast, the Gilis and either Rinjani or the north. Add Komodo if you have longer.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lombok better than Bali? Neither is better — Bali wins on food, hotels, culture and rainy-day options, while Lombok wins on empty beaches, serious hiking, cost and lack of traffic.

Should I visit Bali or Lombok first? If it is your first trip to Indonesia and you have about a week, Bali is the easier and more rewarding choice; go to Lombok if you have been to Bali or specifically want space.

Is Lombok cheaper than Bali? Yes, noticeably — accommodation, food and tours all cost less, though the gap narrows at the top end.

How do you get from Bali to Lombok? Flights take about 30 minutes and run several times daily, and fast boats connect Bali to Lombok and the Gilis in two to three hours.

Can you do Bali and Lombok in two weeks? Comfortably — five or six days on each island is a good split, and the 30-minute flight makes the transfer trivial.

Is Lombok more conservative than Bali? Yes — Lombok is predominantly Muslim and Sasak rather than Hindu, so modest dress away from the beach is expected and alcohol is far less visible.
