Batu Cermin

Batu Cermin — "mirror stone" — is a limestone cave complex about 15 minutes from Labuan Bajo, and it is the easiest excursion in the region: an hour, a short walk, and back in town for lunch.

The name comes from a specific effect. At certain times of day, around midday, sunlight enters through a gap in the rock above and strikes the damp cave walls, which reflect it back so the chamber appears to glow. Whether you see it depends entirely on timing and weather — miss the window or come on an overcast day and it is simply a cave.

The more reliably interesting feature is in the ceiling. Embedded in the limestone are marine fossils — coral, and in places the outline of a turtle and fish — evidence that this hill was once sea floor, lifted by tectonic movement. A guide will point them out with a torch, and it is a genuinely striking thing to stand under.

The complex is a short walk from the car park through a patch of forest where long-tailed macaques live. Inside, some sections require crouching and squeezing through low passages, so it is not suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties or claustrophobia.

Entry is a modest fee and a guide with a torch is included and necessary — there is no lighting inside.
