Munduk

Munduk is a ridge village at around 800 m in Bali's northern highlands, and it is the coolest, greenest and quietest part of the island that is still easy to reach.

The village runs along a single road on a ridge, with the land dropping away on both sides into forested valleys. On a clear morning you can see all the way down to the north coast and the Bali Sea. It is properly cold at night by Indonesian standards, and mist moves through the valleys most afternoons.

The area is waterfall country. Munduk, Melanting, Golden Valley and the Banyumala twin falls are all within a short drive or walk, most reached by steep paths through coffee and clove plantations. A morning spent walking between two or three of them is the classic Munduk day.

Those plantations are the other draw. This is clove, coffee and cacao country, and the smell of drying cloves along the roadside is unmistakable. Small holdings offer tastings, including Bali's kopi luwak — worth knowing that civet coffee production raises real animal-welfare concerns, and that many farms keep caged civets.

Just east are the twin lakes, Buyan and Tamblingan, in old caldera craters, and the much-photographed Ulun Danu Beratan temple sits on Lake Beratan 30 minutes away. Munduk is about 2–2.5 hours from the southern beaches.
