3 Days in Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park

Three days is the shortest trip to Labuan Bajo that does not feel like a mistake. Two days means one rushed boat circuit and a flight; three gives you two days on the water, which is where the difference between seeing Komodo and photographing it lives.

This assumes you fly into Komodo Airport (LBJ), which is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Bali and 10 minutes from the harbour.

The shape of it

The alternative shape is a two-day one-night boat covering days 2 and 3 continuously, sleeping on board. That is the better version if you do not mind a bunk — you get sunrise and sunset on the water instead of in town.

Day 1 — Land and stay on shore

Flights from Bali land late morning or early afternoon. Do not try to squeeze a boat trip into the remainder — you will get a rushed circuit at the worst time of day.

Use the afternoon for one of the two land excursions:

Batu Cermin, 15 minutes from town, is a limestone cave with marine fossils embedded in the ceiling — coral, fish and a turtle outline, evidence the hill was once sea floor. Around midday light reflects off the damp walls, which gives the cave its name. An hour, and some passages need crouching.

Cunca Wulang, 1.5 hours inland, is the better one if you have the time: a river canyon of water-polished rock with deep swimming pools and guided cliff jumps. It needs most of an afternoon and a 30–45 minute walk in.

End on the hilltop bars above the harbour. The sunset over the islands is the best thing in town.

Day 2 — The core park circuit

An early start, and worth every minute of lost sleep.

Padar Island at sunrise. A stepped climb of 20 to 40 minutes to a ridge looking down on three crescent bays, each with a differently coloured beach. No shade anywhere, so sunrise is not just for the light. There are no dragons on Padar — it is a landscape stop.

Pink Beach. The colour comes from crushed red organ-pipe coral and is strongest on wet sand in soft light; at midday it reads as a pale blush. The real reason to stop is the reef, which starts close in and is one of the easiest snorkels in the park.

Dragons on Rinca or Komodo Island. Rinca is closer and its drier, more open terrain often makes sightings easier. Walks are ranger-led — stay with the group, and do not join with an open wound.

Manta Point. A drift snorkel over a cleaning station where reef mantas hover while cleaner fish work on them. You do not need to dive. The boat drops you upstream and collects you downstream; never swim against it.

Day 3 — North, or slow, then fly

If you booked a two-day one-night boat, this is the morning you wake up at anchor — ideally at Gili Lawa Darat in the north, where a 30–45 minute ridge walk opens over two sheltered bays. The anchorage has no light pollution at all, so the night before is usually the best sky of the trip.

If you are shore-based, use day 3 for the easier islands: Kanawa for shallow reef straight off a jetty with turtles, and Kelor for a steep fifteen-minute hill with a 360-degree view, 30 minutes from town.

Fly out in the afternoon. Give yourself a real buffer — boats come back late more often than they come back early.

Fees, honestly

Budget for several separate charges: park entrance, ranger guiding, conservation and per-activity fees, mostly cash at the park. Rates have changed repeatedly in recent years, so confirm the current total with your operator rather than trusting a blog figure — including this one.

There are no ATMs inside the national park. Withdraw in Labuan Bajo before you sail.
