How to Get to Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo, on the western tip of Flores, is the only sensible gateway to Komodo National Park. There are three ways in, and they differ by a factor of about thirty in travel time.

Most people should fly. But the alternatives are genuinely worth understanding, because one of them is a holiday in itself.

Option 1: fly (what almost everyone does)

Komodo Airport (LBJ) sits about 10 minutes from the harbour — one of the shortest airport-to-action transfers anywhere in Indonesia.

From Bali (Denpasar, DPS): roughly 1 hour 15 minutes, with multiple daily departures across several carriers. This is the standard route and the one to default to.

From Jakarta: direct flights exist and take around 2.5 hours, though many itineraries route via Denpasar.

From Lombok (LOP): possible, usually with a short connection through Denpasar. Worth knowing, because travellers often assume the only option from Lombok is the multi-day boat.

Flights fill in peak season (July to September) and around Indonesian holidays. Book ahead.

Option 2: the sailing route from Lombok

The scenic alternative. Boats leave Lombok and take three to four days to reach Labuan Bajo, stopping at islands no fly-in itinerary reaches.

Moyo Island off Sumbawa has the stacked travertine pools of Mata Jitu. Satonda Island holds a salt crater lake made saline by the 1815 Tambora eruption. The boat then enters the national park from the north, through Gili Lawa Darat.

Option 3: the Sumbawa ferry

The overland-and-ferry route, for people committed to not flying.

Cross Lombok to Sumbawa by ferry, drive the length of Sumbawa — a long day — to Sape on its eastern tip, then take the public ferry from Sape to Labuan Bajo, which runs roughly six to eight hours depending on conditions and vessel.

It is cheap and it is an experience. It is also slow, the schedules change, and the Sape crossing is regularly delayed or cancelled in poor weather. Do not attempt it on a fixed deadline.

Timing your arrival

The thing worth planning is what you do on landing day.

Flights from Bali typically land late morning or early afternoon. That is too late to start a boat trip properly — you would get a rushed circuit at the hottest, most crowded time of day.

Use the afternoon on land instead: Batu Cermin cave is 15 minutes away, Cunca Wulang canyon is 1.5 hours inland, and the hilltop bars above the harbour do the best sunset in town. Then start the boat early the next morning. Our 3-day Labuan Bajo itinerary sets this out day by day.

Leaving

Build in a buffer. Boat trips come back late more often than early, and if your park boat docks at 4pm you do not want a 5pm flight.

If you are on a multi-day boat, leave a full spare day in Labuan Bajo before any international connection. Weather delays on the return leg are normal, not exceptional.

Withdraw cash before you sail — there are no ATMs inside the national park, and the park fees are collected in cash.
