Rinjani Crater Rim Trek for Beginners: The Honest Guide
Quick answer: The Rinjani crater rim trek is a 2-day, 1-night hike to a 2,639 m caldera viewpoint above Segara Anak lake — no summit push, no 2am scree climb. It suits fit beginners. GumilangTour runs it as a private guided trip from Lombok; book by enquiry and the permits are arranged for you.
Most people who ask about a "beginner Rinjani trek" are really asking one question: can I see the caldera without doing the 2am summit push? The answer is yes — that trip is the crater rim trek, and it is a genuinely different product from the summit climb, not a watered-down version of it.
This guide explains exactly what the crater rim trek involves, how hard it actually is, which gate to start from, and the 2026 park rules that decide when and how you can book it.
What does "crater rim" actually mean on Mount Rinjani?
The crater rim is the lip of Rinjani's caldera, and it is where every version of the trek spends its first night. Three separate destinations get loosely called "the Rinjani trek", and confusing them is the single most common booking mistake:
- The crater rim — a camp on the caldera edge at roughly 2,639 m (Pelawangan II, above Sembalun) or 2,641 m (Pelawangan I, above Senaru). You stand on the edge and look *down* into the caldera at Segara Anak lake and the young cone of Gunung Baru Jari.
- The summit — 3,726 m, reached by leaving the rim camp at around 2am and climbing roughly 1,100 vertical metres of loose volcanic scree in the dark.
- The lake — Segara Anak sits at about 2,004 m inside the caldera, with hot springs beside it. Reaching it means descending from the rim and then climbing all the way back out.
A crater rim trek stops at the first of those three. That one decision removes the hardest part of the mountain while keeping the view that almost everyone came for. The caldera panorama from the rim — lake, cone and the ridge falling away beneath you — is the image you have almost certainly already seen.
How hard is the Rinjani crater rim trek, really?
It is a hard day's walking that a fit beginner can complete, but it is not a stroll — and no honest operator will tell you otherwise.
Here is the context that most beginner guides leave out. Indonesia's national park grading system, introduced under the Ministry of Forestry's mountaineering standards, places Mount Rinjani in Grade IV — the tier reserved for demanding peaks where prior high-altitude experience is expected, and where climbers are asked to show they have done something like a Grade III mountain first (CNA Indonesia, checked August 2026).
So "beginner-friendly Rinjani" is a relative statement. The crater rim trek is the beginner-appropriate *version* of a mountain that is officially classified as advanced. What makes it accessible is not that the walking is easy — it is that the crater rim trek removes the three genuinely dangerous elements of a summit attempt: the darkness, the altitude above 3,000 m, and the scree.
The realistic numbers for day one
Day one of a Rinjani crater rim trek is a single long climb of 6 to 8 hours, and the numbers are the same whether or not you plan to summit the following morning. From the Sembalun gate (1,156 m) to the Sembalun crater rim (2,639 m) is a climb of roughly 1,480 vertical metres, typically 6–8 hours of walking. The route crosses open savannah for the first two to three hours — flat, hot, deceptively pleasant — before the section local guides call the Seven Hills, which is where most first-timers discover what they signed up for. The last hour to the rim is the steepest of the day.
From the Senaru gate (601 m) to the Senaru crater rim (2,641 m) is a bigger climb — around 2,040 vertical metres — but almost all of it is under rainforest canopy, which changes the experience completely.
Crater rim vs summit: which trek should a beginner book?
A beginner should book the crater rim trek. The Rinjani crater rim trek tops out at about 2,639 m after roughly 10 to 13 hours of walking spread over two days, while a summit trek adds a 2am start and 3 to 4 hours of loose scree to reach 3,726 m, taking total walking time to roughly 17 to 20 hours. The table below sets the three standard formats side by side.
| Crater rim 2D/1N | Summit 2D/1N | Summit + lake 3D/2N | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highest point | ~2,639 m | 3,726 m | 3,726 m |
| Night starts | Sleep through | 2am wake-up | 2am wake-up |
| Hardest section | Final hour to the rim | 3–4 hrs of scree in the dark | Scree, plus the climb back out of the caldera |
| Total walking | ~10–13 hrs over 2 days | ~17–20 hrs over 2 days | ~24–28 hrs over 3 days |
| Altitude risk | Low | Real above 3,000 m | Real above 3,000 m |
| See the lake | From above only | From above only | Swim in it, use the hot springs |
| Suits | Fit beginners, families with teens, photographers | Regular hikers with hill experience | Experienced trekkers with time |
| Park fee days | 2 days | 2 days | 3 days |
The rule of thumb our guides use: if you cannot walk uphill for four hours without stopping to recover, the summit will not go well — and the crater rim will. If you can, and you actively want the summit, book the Rinjani 2D/1N summit trek instead. If you want the lake and the hot springs, the Rinjani 3D/2N summit, lake and hot springs trek is the only version that includes them. We compare those two in detail in Rinjani 2D1N vs 3D2N.
A real 2D/1N crater rim itinerary from Sembalun
A Rinjani crater rim trek from the Sembalun gate runs as a hotel pickup before dawn, a 6 to 8 hour climb, one night camping on the caldera edge and a 4 hour descent the next morning. Below is the shape of the trip as GumilangTour runs it, not a generic template.
Day 1
- 05:30–07:00 — Pickup from your hotel. From Senggigi or Mataram allow about 2.5 hours to Sembalun; from Kuta Lombok closer to 3.5; from Lombok International Airport around 3 hours.
- 08:30 — Registration at the Sembalun gate. Permit checks, a basic health screening, and your porters load up.
- 09:00–12:00 — The savannah crossing. Open, exposed, minimal shade. This is where people burn energy they need later.
- 12:00–13:00 — Lunch cooked on the trail at Pos 2 or Pos 3.
- 13:00–16:30 — The Seven Hills, then the final steep pitch to the rim.
- 16:30 — Camp is already pitched when you arrive — the porters go ahead. Sunset over the caldera is usually between 17:45 and 18:15.
- Evening — Dinner at camp. It gets genuinely cold at 2,639 m; think 5–10°C with wind.
Day 2
- 05:30 — Sunrise from the rim, with the summit ridge lit up above you and the lake still in shadow below.
- 07:00 — Breakfast, then pack.
- 08:00–12:00 — Descent to Sembalun. Descending is faster but harder on knees than the climb up.
- Afternoon — Transfer back to your hotel, or straight on to the Gili Islands if you are moving on.
What fitness do you need for the crater rim trek?
The Rinjani crater rim trek requires the fitness to walk uphill for four hours without needing to stop and recover, plus reliable knees for a four-hour descent the next day. These are the five benchmarks that actually predict who has a good day on the mountain:
- You can walk uphill for 4 hours continuously. Not 4 hours with long breaks — 4 hours of moving.
- You have done at least one full-day hike before, ideally with 800 m or more of ascent.
- You can carry a 5–7 kg daypack. Porters carry the camp, the food and the water, but your own layers, camera and 2 litres of water are on you.
- Your knees are reliable on descents. Day two is four hours of downhill. Trekking poles are not optional for most people over 45.
- You are comfortable with a night at 2,639 m. Altitude sickness is uncommon at rim height, but broken sleep and cold are near-universal.
If two or more of those are a "no", the honest answer is that a Lombok waterfall and village day tour will give you a much better holiday than a trek you have to abandon at Pos 3.
Which gate should beginners start from?
Three gates lead to a crater rim on Mount Rinjani — Sembalun, Senaru and Aik Berik — and for a beginner the choice is mostly about heat and canopy rather than distance. Sembalun is the standard choice for a crater rim trek. It starts higher (1,156 m), so there is less climbing, and the rim camp there is the one directly beneath the summit ridge.
Senaru climbs further but does it under rainforest canopy, which many people find far more pleasant than open savannah in the middle of the day. It is the better call if you burn easily or are trekking in the hotter months. We break the choice down fully in Sembalun vs Senaru.
Aik Berik, on the southern side in Central Lombok, is the quiet alternative. It reaches its own crater rim viewpoint over Segara Anak through rainforest, rivers and waterfalls, sees a fraction of the traffic, and sits in the park's cheaper fee class. It does not connect to the summit — which, for a crater rim trek, is not a drawback.
Which 2026 park rules affect when you can book?
Mount Rinjani is one of the most tightly regulated mountains in Indonesia, and four rules changed materially for the 2026 season: the rainy-season closure dates, online-only permits, a tighter guide ratio, and compulsory trekking insurance. All of the following was checked August 2026 — confirm the current position with Rinjani National Park before you finalise dates.
The mountain closes every rainy season. All climbing routes were closed from 1 January to 31 March 2026 and reopened on 1 April 2026, announced by the head of the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority under announcement number PG.8/T.39/TU/KSA.04.01/B/12/2025 (RRI). Expect a comparable closure each year and never book flights around a January or February trek.
Booking is online-only, through eRinjani. There is no walk-up ticket and no paying at the gate — permits are issued through the eRinjani app and the park's official channels, with registration required several days ahead. Foreign passport holders cannot issue themselves a permit; the booking has to run through a registered guide or trekking operator. That is not an upsell, it is how the system is built.
Guide ratios tightened in January 2026 to a maximum of four foreign trekkers per certified guide, down from a looser ratio previously (CNA Indonesia). Practically, this means small groups are now the law rather than a premium feature. More detail in do you need a guide to climb Mount Rinjani in 2026.
Third-party costs you will pay regardless of who you book with (checked August 2026):
| Item | Published figure | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Park entrance, Class 1 routes (Sembalun, Senaru, Torean) | IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per day | Raised 3 November 2025 under Minister of Forestry Regulation No. 17/2025 (published fee update) |
| Park entrance, Class 2 routes (Aik Berik, Tetebatu, Timbanuh) | IDR 200,000 per foreign visitor per day | Same regulation |
| Mandatory trekking insurance | Around IDR 290,000 per person, as published by operators for the 2026 season | Covers helicopter evacuation; confirm the current figure at booking |
The per-day wording matters and catches people out: a 2D/1N crater rim trek on a Class 1 route is charged as two days of entrance fee, not one.
Waste rules are enforced, not decorative. The park publishes a public blacklist of trekkers barred for violations, and one of the recurring listed offences is bringing down less rubbish than you carried up. Single-use plastic is out; a reusable bottle and your own rubbish bag are in.

Expert tips
- Train on descents, not ascents. Almost everyone prepares by walking uphill. Day two of a crater rim trek is four hours of continuous downhill on volcanic gravel, and sore quads on the way down end more trips than tired lungs on the way up. Walk down hills, or down stairs, for the six weeks before you come.
- Bring a head torch even though you are not summiting. There is no lighting at the rim camp, sunset at 2,639 m is abrupt, and the walk from your tent to the toilet area in the dark is genuinely hazardous on a caldera edge.
- Do not underestimate the cold. People pack for tropical Lombok and then spend the night shivering. At the rim you want a warm mid-layer, a windproof shell, a hat and dry socks to change into on arrival — the clothes you climbed in will be soaked with sweat.
- Eat on the savannah, before you feel like it. The first three hours are flat and easy, so people skip snacks, then hit the Seven Hills with nothing in the tank. Eat something small every 45 minutes from the gate onwards.
- Take an empty dry bag for your rubbish. The park operates a blacklist of trekkers barred for bringing down less rubbish than they carried up, and enforcement is real. A dedicated bag keeps your pack clean and keeps you off that list.
- Book around the closure, not around your flights. Mount Rinjani was closed 1 January to 31 March 2026 and reopened 1 April 2026 (checked August 2026). Confirm the next season's dates with the national park before you buy anything non-refundable.
- Trekking poles matter more than boots. Sturdy trail shoes you have already broken in beat brand-new boots every time, but poles are what save your knees on the descent — bring or hire two, not one.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Rinjani crater rim trek suitable for beginners?
Yes, for fit beginners. The Rinjani crater rim trek is a 2-day, 1-night hike to a caldera viewpoint at about 2,639 m with no summit attempt, so it removes the 2am start, the loose scree and the altitude above 3,000 m. It still involves 6 to 8 hours of uphill walking on day one, so you should be able to walk uphill continuously for around four hours before booking it.
How hard is the crater rim trek compared with the Rinjani summit?
The crater rim trek is roughly half the effort of a summit trek. A crater rim trip is about 10 to 13 hours of walking across two days and tops out near 2,639 m. A summit trek adds a 2am departure and 3 to 4 hours of climbing loose volcanic scree to 3,726 m, taking total walking time to roughly 17 to 20 hours. Indonesia's national park grading places Mount Rinjani in Grade IV, its demanding tier, so the crater rim version is the accessible option on an advanced mountain rather than an easy hike.
Can you do the Rinjani crater rim trek in one day?
In practice, no. The climb from the Sembalun gate at 1,156 m to the crater rim at 2,639 m takes most people 6 to 8 hours, and the descent takes another 4 hours. Attempting both in daylight means starting before dawn and finishing exhausted, and it costs you the sunset and sunrise from the rim, which is the main reason to go. The standard and sensible format is 2 days and 1 night camping on the rim.
Do you need a guide for the Rinjani crater rim trek?
Yes. Permits for Mount Rinjani are issued only through the eRinjani online system, and foreign passport holders cannot issue themselves a permit, so the booking must run through a registered guide or trekking operator. Since January 2026 the park also caps groups at a maximum of four foreign trekkers per certified guide. GumilangTour arranges the permits, guides and porters as part of the trip.
When is Mount Rinjani open for trekking in 2026?
Mount Rinjani's climbing routes were closed from 1 January to 31 March 2026 for the rainy season and reopened on 1 April 2026, under an announcement from the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority. A comparable closure happens each rainy season, so treks are not bookable in January, February or March. Always confirm current dates with Rinjani National Park before booking flights. Checked August 2026.
What third-party fees do you pay on a Rinjani crater rim trek?
Park entrance on the Class 1 routes of Sembalun, Senaru and Torean was published at IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per day, and the Class 2 routes of Aik Berik, Tetebatu and Timbanuh at IDR 200,000 per foreign visitor per day, following Minister of Forestry Regulation No. 17/2025. Because the fee is charged per day, a 2-day trek is charged for two days. Mandatory trekking insurance was published at around IDR 290,000 per person for the 2026 season. Checked August 2026. GumilangTour prices its own trips per booking and confirms them on enquiry.
