Two Weeks in Indonesia Without Flying: Bali to Komodo Overland and by Sea

You can travel from Bali to Komodo without boarding a single aircraft. Ferries and fast boats link the whole chain — Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores — and the journey passes islands that no fly-in itinerary reaches.

This is a slower, cheaper, considerably less predictable way to see the same three regions. It suits people for whom the transit is part of the holiday. If you want the efficient version with flights, read our Bali–Lombok–Komodo itinerary instead; this one is deliberately the long way round.

The route

Fourteen days, no flights, one direction. You end in Flores, which is where the no-fly rule finally breaks — you will almost certainly fly home from Komodo Airport.

Days 1–4: Bali

Start in the south. Canggu or Seminyak for the first two nights, then inland to Ubud for two more.

The south gives you beaches, food and Uluwatu — the clifftop temple and the sunset Kecak fire dance, which is genuinely one of Bali's best hours. Ubud gives you Tegallalang before 7am, the holy springs at Tirta Empul, and the Campuhan Ridge Walk at sunrise.

If you want a volcano here, Mount Batur is a 2am pickup and a two-hour climb. Consider skipping it — Rinjani is coming.

Day 5: crossing to Lombok

Fast boats run from Padangbai and Serangan to Lombok and the Gilis in two to three hours. There is also a slower, cheaper public ferry from Padangbai to Lembar that takes four to five hours.

Days 6–8: Lombok's south coast

Base in Kuta. Three days covers the bays — Mawun, Selong Belanak, Tanjung Aan and Bukit Merese for sunset — plus a day inland for Sukarara weaving, Banyumulek pottery and the Benang Kelambu waterfalls.

Learn to surf at Selong Belanak if you never have. Sand bottom, forgiving wave, roughly IDR 150,000–250,000 for two hours with a board.

Days 9–10: the Gilis

North to Bangsal, then 15 minutes by boat to Gili Air. No cars, no motorbikes, turtles off the beach. Break the drive north at the Malimbu and Nipah viewpoints.

Two nights is right. Three if you are diving.

Days 11–14: the sailing route to Flores

The centrepiece. Boats leave Lombok and take three to four days to reach Labuan Bajo, and the stops are what you came for.

Moyo Island off Sumbawa, with the stacked travertine pools of Mata Jitu. Satonda Island, a volcanic crater holding a salt lake made saline by the 1815 Tambora eruption — the largest in recorded history. Then into the national park from the north through Gili Lawa Darat, where the anchorage has no light pollution and the sky is as good as anywhere in Indonesia.

The park itself follows: Padar at sunrise, dragons on Rinca, Pink Beach, and a drift snorkel at Manta Point.

What can go wrong

Be clear-eyed about this. Every leg is weather-dependent, and the sailing route in particular is cancelled or delayed with some regularity, especially December to February.

The boats are simple. Shared cabins or deck mattresses, basic bathrooms, often no air conditioning, and no way to leave partway. If you get seasick, four days is a long time.

Build in buffer days. If your flight home leaves Labuan Bajo 24 hours after the boat is due to dock, you have designed a problem. Two spare days at the end is the sane version, and Labuan Bajo has enough — Cunca Wulang, Batu Cermin — to fill them.

Is it worth it?

If your priority is seeing three regions efficiently, no — fly, and use the saved days on the ground.

If you want the four days between Lombok and Flores to be part of the holiday rather than a gap in it, then yes, comfortably. Those are the days people talk about afterwards.
